I can't bring hotmail up on my home computer. It takes me to a page that
says this very fact and the diagnostic report indicated that all connections
are good. I connected my hotmail account from a computer at my workplace, so
my account is still there. What the heck may wrong here? I haven't been able
toaccess my account since Friday 19 Oct! Help! This is the only forum I seem
to be able to reach. Hopefully someone from Tech Support reads this!

Try clearing your cookies and deleting temporary Internet Files.
Try signing in at both www.hotmail.com and at http://mail.live.com

If you still need support, http://support.live.com - select Windows Live Hotmail
Note that the autoreply may need to be responded to in order to open the case,
and sadly it can take quite a while for a response after that.

Hi All
Thanks to the so called "Upgrade" of Hotmail to Windows Live, I now have 6
email accounts that no longer work and which are unusable; one of them is
paid for (subscription) and 5 are free accounts. There no longer seems to be
anyone in Tech support at Hotmail that can be emailed directly to sort out
the problem, as there was previously. This is quite unacceptable. Nothing in
any of the Help menus is of any help. I have spent hours trying to get my
Hotmail accounts to work. I need to be able to contact a Tech support person
urgently to sort this out. Does anyone know how to do this?
I cannot reply to my emails, move emails from one folder to another,
frequently cannot load my inbox, get frequent error messages, cannot delete
anything, etc, etc.
ie. I now have totally unusable accounts. This is costing me money and is
simply not good enough. Why can MSN not fix this or alternatively (and
immediately) go back to the previous version of hotmail that worked well and
needed no changes?
Please if anyone has any suggestions or knows how to get in touch with a
technical support person please reply (although since I can't even send
emails any more I don't know how I will be able to even get in touch with a
tech support person).
This situation is totally unacceptable and untenable. The upgarde was
unecessary and the present version of Hotmail is full of bugs.
TO MSN HOTMAIL : PLEASE FIX THIS MESS IMMEDIATELY OR GO BACK TO THE PREVIOUS
VERSION OF HOTMAIL THAT WORKED PERCFECTLY UNTIL LAST WEEK. ALSO PLESAE ADVISE

Hi All
As of today I still have 6 unusable Hotmail accounts, as described in my
original post. Is MSN even interested in hearing the problems and fixing
them???
What is the use of having accounts that no longer work? These accounts have
been trouble free for many years and this situation is totally unacceptable.
I have had no usable email now for a week. These so called "upgrades" were
unecessary and not requested and immediate action by MSN to fix this mess is
required.
If there is a phone number please advise here what it actually is for
Melbourne, Australia as the link does not work and I have spent hours trying
to get tech support to no avail via the "Support" option (which also does not
function properly in my accounts since the upgrade).

Already tried all that. It makes no difference. There is and has never been
any problem signing in. The problem is once I have signed in...I can read
emails but not reply, move to folders, depete, forward etc, etc. I can read
them only.
Please can someone look up the phone number that is apparently available
(mentioned in a post above) and post it here, as I cannot access any type of
tech support via hotmail links, due to the problem. Nothing works. This
problem and the complete lack of response from MSN Hotmail is getting way out
of hand.

I am happy to have found this forum. I hope some resolution can be found.

About 5-6 weeks ago, Hotmail suddenly stopped working for my wife and I. She
uses IE to access, and gets a message that the page cannot be loaded. I use
Firefox to access, and I get a more detailed message saying that the page I
have reached is redirecting in a pattern that will never complete. Watching
the addresses reached in the Firefox status bar at the bottom of the screen
does show a circular pattern of references.

That situation "healed" itself after about a week and a half, spontaneously.
Now, as of Friday, Oct 19, this same problem has happened again -- suddenly.
I have downloaded the new Microsoft Live Mail Beta client, and with that I
can get to my hotmail messages, and those for my wife as well. However, that
Beta software does not work terribly well, is slow, and downloads the
messages when I don't want that to happen. I like having Hotmail be
web-based, and not have the messages stored on my computer.

This is more of a problem for my wife than for me. I use Hotmail only as a
secondary location. For her, it is primary, and she is cut off from the world.

If we wait and suffer, will this situation "heal" itself once again? Does
Microsoft accept that there is a problem to deal with?

Please read related posts in this discussion group. There is something
about deleting cookies and temporary Internet Explorer files.

You can also access your Hotmail messages using either Outlook Express,
Outlook or MSN Explorer if you have one of various paid accounts. The
cheapest is Windows Live Hotmail Plus, available here
http://get.live.com/mailplus/features at $19.95 a year. If you use Outlook
Express and HTTP server the messages stay online. The interface is
different, but it has been stable with respect to recent Windows Live Mail
upgrades. Server changes don't affect the interface if you use Outlook
Express or some other local program to access the mail.

Another option is MSN Premium at $9.95 a month. That is rather pricey but
it allows you to use MSN Explorer. Some people like it, some people do not.
If you get MSN Premium, you can incorporate your wife's email and yours too
in the same master account, so you only have to pay once. MSN Premium
accounts seem immune to the interface changes too. They seem more reluctant
to force upgrades on actual paying customers.

Cheers,

Earle

can get to my hotmail messages, and those for my wife as well.

To add and clarify.
All MSN Premium accounts(and there have been many that fall under that
name)
To name a few in the last 12 years
- MSn Dial Up: Legacy Pop3 or MSn Explorer
- MSn Bring Your Own Isp: Legacy Pop3 or MSn Explorer
- MSn Partner DSL that do not fall under the current partner offerings:
Legacy Pop3 or MSn Explorer
- MSn Senior Accounts(afaik-no longer offered but some exist): Pop3 or
later converted to MSn Explorer

The above 'paying' accounts were included in the auto- upgrade to the
Windows Live Hotmail interface instead of the older 'Classic' version.

Other things to consider if IE7 installed(ymmv in IE6)
Add live.com and hotmail.com to IE's settings\Privacy\Sites and set each
to 'Allow'
to enable cookies for the above domains
Also set the Privacy\Settings slider to Low or Medium(test/compare to
the user's preferred setting)

Do not add Live.com and Hotmail.com to the Trusted Sites zone.

I don't know what the option is called, but both my wife and I have been
paying $19.95 per year for more space and better filtering for several years.

I tried the new "Windows Live" interface on the browser, and I find that it
totally sucks. Went back to the classic interface right away. The navigation
options were severely changed, and after nearly 10 years of using hotmail one
way, I did not want to suffer through a new interface that was radically
antithetical to the way I do things in hotmail.

I have not tried deleting cookies or internet files. Why should I have to?
This problem is not MY fault, it appeared once, and then went away with me
doing NOTHING. Now the problem is back with exactly the same behavior as
before, after being healed spontaneously before.

It seems to me that someone is making changes to the hotmail system, and
sometimes introducing a bad behavior.

We both have IE7, and we use different machines. I do not use IE7 at all,
unless I find a website that requires it. Hotmail normally works fine with
Firefox, and I have seen no statement to expect otherwise.

When this problem is not active, hotmail works just fine.

In that case you should have both HTTP and pop3 access through Outlook
Express or Outlook, if you want to use it. HTTP lets you work with online
storage, and both seem immune to the sorts of problems you have reported.
It is true that there are occasional outages, but it is that way with
everything.

If you don't choose to do that, you can cut that fee to $19.95 total if you
elect to become an MSN Premium subscriber. Afaik, you can get the same
space and filtering with one account, that you now get with two paid
accounts.

No, it is not your fault what is happening, and a paying customer shouldn't
expect to have to fiddle with a service to the extent of deleting cookies
and internet files. I have, on the other hand, spent quite a few hours over
the years on the phone with the cable company, the satellite company, the
phone company and even the power company to make sure that the service I got
was the service I had ordered. I have even called MSN a few times, even
though I shouldn't have had to.

Cheers,

Earle

Maybe...
While all $19.95 accounts, once OE4 was released became true Pop3, the
legacy pop3 status could have been removed due to installation of MSn
Explorer. If so, http access would only be available. Pop3 is currently
only available for Premium legacy pop3 and Hotmail Plus subscribers and
those mentioned in the prior post, and of course your Qwest-MSn account<g>.

MSN Premium is a whole lot more than the cost of Windows Live Hotmail Plus,
Earle. If you aren't getting Premium as a freebie with your ISP as you are, the
cost is 9.95 per month.

On this we absolutely agree, Earle. I imagine that the problems being faced are
indeed related to the upgrades and server side issues when we find that the only
solution is to clear cookies and dump the temporary Internet files, both of
which I suggest, but don't practice myself except as a last resort.

That's right. Too much writing on the back of this envelope. Better get a
new one. It's not really a freebie. I am probably paying like $20 monthly
to MSN and the rest to Qwest. It's been especially reliable so far. Way
more reliable than Hughes/Direcway, and light years ahead of Starband.
A little bit better than Comcast.

Thanks Earle,

That was a helpful message. When this problem began happening last week, I
opened up Outlook Express and looked for "hotmail" in the Help, because I
thought I remembered that OE could connect to Hotmail. When the Help returned
an empty search, I did not think that OE supported it anymore, and that is
why I then downloaded the new Windows Live Mail Beta.

Your message caused me to look in OE for HTTP instead of Hotmail, and --
there it is, full instructions for hooking up to an http source, including
Hotmail. And, it works fine -- much better than WLM Beta as far as I can tell.

I certainly was not complaining about the cost when I mentioned paying
$19.95 for each of two accounts. We *want* two accounts, and the cost is
minor. And, I have accessed Hotmail only by web interface for years in order
to take advantage of portability when I am traveling. Until now, that
strategy has always worked well for me.

In all honesty, I have not followed all the Premium, Plus, Live nonsense,
and I really haven't a clue which is which. Good old Hotmail with the
"Classic" web interface is very much good enough. Been using it for years and
years.

That's good diagnostic info.
Which indicates if it remains a problem the new server used by WLM for
http accounts may be more at fault than any other setting.

The http server used in OE(or OL etc) by default is different than the
default server chosen in Windows Live Mail.
The OE http server can be used in WLM instead of the default(DeltaSync)
server for all http accounts only if manually entered.

The http servers for local email clients for enabled http accounts:

MSn EX or msn.com grandfathered or premium (OE/OL02/OL03/OL07/WLM)
http://oe.msn.msnmail.hotmail.com/cgi-bin/hmdata

Hotmail grandfathered or premium((OE/OL02/OL03/OL07/WLM)
http://services.msn.com/svcs/hotmail/httpmail.asp
or
http://oe.hotmail.com/secure/hmdata

WLM(both msn.com and hotmail.com address) by default uses this server.

This is true but you can still access your mail as an MSN Premium or
whatever customer locally using the MSN software, and they don't appear
eager to change the look and feel of that. However, who knows what they
will do? I understand the attraction of an online mail service, no need to
backup, accessibility from any computer, etc., but when your provider makes
massive changes like this it makes you think. No matter how slight the
change, there is some training implication for you using it, and if you have
no control over when it takes place that can be inconvenient.

I have been using the web portal for email on an occasional basis, such as
checking my email at the college when I didn't bring my laptop to tap into
the wireless network. The recent changes to me are no big deal, but if it
were my only tool for sending, receiving and storing email that might be
different. If that is the case why trust all your saved messages to a web
site that is likely to change without notice and will annihilate your
account when you take a thirty day vacation? The going price is $19.95 a
year from several providers, for annual email service. The amount that some
people use email, it must mean something to them, heck that is cheap
insurance.

There has been a lot of complaining here, but not as much as it could be. I
wonder how the grand majority of users are finding this change. There are
lots of people, if it says Microsoft on the box, it is inevitable. Time
will tell.

Cheers,

All valid points.
Likewise, Outlook is my preferred email client. Web access is rare save a
visit to block a domain or add a safe sender to the filters.

I don't know the future of MSn Explorer. The platform/team or whatever its
called was renamed Windows Live a while ago. I would seem that the natural
progression/evolution of the WLM interface would take on a greater role as
the local client.

The inactivity period on free accounts converted/migrated to Live Hotmail
accounts iirc is now 120 days.

I'm actually not familiar with WebTV accounts. I believe that you have the
ability to access them if you are using the MSNTV2 device and subscribe to
MSNTV.

You should contact Windows Live Hotmail support at http:support.live.com to
check out if you have any options available to you.
