Setting MSN email as default email in Vista
(too old to reply)

Okay...I'm not a computer guy so please use terms that I can understand. I
have just bought a Dimension desktop from Dell with Vista installed. My ISP
is Qwest and I have a DSL modem and MSN premium. MSN premium comes with a
browser that I downloaded onto my desktop and one that I like to use since I
am familiar with it and it has some very nice functions. Anyway, when I
click on an email hyperlink, Vista pops up Window's mail.
I have spoken to every tech support group known to man: Vista, MSN, Dell,
Qwest..hardware, software.....whatever. No one can help me.

What I want: When I click on a hyperlink, I'd like my msn browser to be
able to use it's email function. I am not interested in using a replacement
for Outlook or any other email function provided by Vista. Oh, and I've
tried to set MSN as the default program, but it doesn't even come up.

Thanks.

I think you are out of luck.
Clicking on an email link invokes what is called the
MAILTO protocol function. That function was designed
to work with an email client program. The MSN browser
is not an email client program.
It appears that this is one of many drawbacks of web mail.

yeah, I actually looked for the "mailto" and it isn't even listed

countless times in XP. I'm thinking about having it reinstalled.

yeah, I know that. Thank you, however, no longer want Microsoft Mail. My
MSN is not listed (on the left hand side) with all of the programs that I can
choose from as my default mail. Under "set programs and computer defaults",
under Microsoft Configurations, my MSN browser is not on the drop down, as a
matter of fact Gary, there is no drop down menue at all, just a button for
Microsoft Mail and nothing else.

So, how can my MSN premium browser be allowed to use my msn.com email
address as the default email program?? (thus the first post in the thread!)

What you want is for the "MailTo:" link to invoke your MSN Browser to access
your MSN Web Mail account. AFAIK, a "MailTo:" link can only invoke a mail
client. As the Vermont farmer told the visiting New York city slicker, "You
can't get there from here."

Wayne,

Have you actually done this and confirmed that is resolves the problem?
When it asks if you want to remove all of you Email contact and Calendar
information does that mean that I will loose all that info? WIll I loose any
email saved?

I had the same issue related to MSN mail being the default in July
08. Matter was caused in Vista by the user accounts.
1. I inactivated (turned off) my "user accounts".
2. I then went to MSN mail settings, select email options, at end of
options is "use MSN mail to send and receive", click on that and then
click save.
3. Right click task bar, then start menu tab, then customize button.
In the window that opens make sure in selection on that window you
select check for "Internet link" and e-mail link and use selection
buttons to chose IE, and MSN Mail as defaults then I OK and close.

This was the issue with Vista, MSN Mail as defaults and having User
Accounts on, was preventing it from defaulting to MSN Mail.

works like a charm.

I wanted to do the same thing, and here is the solution I discovered and implemented:
* Install the Windows Live Mail client:
http://download.live.com/wlmail
This allows you to consolidate all your email accounts into one client program, and also use your email offline also.
* Configure the Live Mail client to read in your MSN mail. It is very simple to do - just enter your email address and password.
* Go to Start - Default Programs
* Windows Live Mail now appears as an option - select it as your default
* Now whenever you click on a mail hyperlink, Windows Live Mail will launch, and you have the option to send from your MSN mail.
