Discussion:
can't open attachments in MSN Mail
(too old to reply)

As of three days ago, I am unable to open attachments in my MSN Mail. I have
Verizon with MSN Premium. I can open them in my Hotmail account. The
attachments are clean -- I even sent myself one as a test. It says "Cannot
execute command". I have tried to get help from Dell and they were unable to
fix it. They suggested that I contact Microsoft. Can anyone please advise
me what to do or whom to call? Thank you.

Why would Dell care? Your first place to call for apparent MSN Explorer
problems is your Customer Support number at Verizon. Go here, sign in with
your MSN primary account credentials, and it should redirect you to the
proper site, which will be Verison-specific.

http://support.msn.com/

If they are anything like Qwest they won't be able to help you, but if you
bug them enough they may escalate it to MSN Customer Support.

Well, Dell doesn't "care", but I have a service contract witih them so they
are obligated to try and help me! I DID go through all of the customer
support stuff on the MSN Member Center and Verizon pages! I always check
things like that myself before asking others for help. I ran all the
automated fix-it tools, etc. and then called the Verizon help number. All I
got was a computer offering to walk me through my email settings (which I
have already checked). No help whatsoever. Like I said, I need a contact
number for MICROSOFT.

Yes, the problem did start after installing IE8. It was "IE8 optimized for
MSN", so I guess that's when the MSN updated, as well.

What happens when you remove "IE8 optimized for MSN" from your computer?

Is there any reason to have it?

IE8 for MSn doesn't update Msn Premium Software...it only provides optional MSn items that are available as separate
downloads(toolbar etc). The only source for Msn Premium is ordering the cd via the web, your msn member site, or ordering via
phone.

Information to contact Microsoft is provided in my post. You need to keep
pressing buttons at the Verizon number until you get a human. Microsoft has
a certain obligation to you to support MSN on your system, but only after
Verizon escalates the issue to them. Perhaps they will respond to E-Mail.

When exactly did you install IE8? See recent threads in this group
involving Vista. You are lucky to even get MSN to install under Vista.

I installed IE8 a few days ago for no good reason other than I like to try
new things. That is most likely the culprit. I will do as you suggest and
try and try again to reach Verizon. If that fails, I'll go back to IE7. I
read some of those other posts. I was unaware of the Vista/MSN compatibility
issue. Now a lot of problems that I've had over the past couple of years
make sense. When my service contract is up, I may go with another provider.
Thanks for the information!

Just a shot in the dark. Make sure that IE 8 has a checkmark to show that it is

MSN Explorer browser actually is a front end for Internet Explorer. My
understanding is that it has been tested with IE7, but not with IE8. That's
probably why it doesn't work so well with the second one.

I have Qwest Choice DSL with MSN Premium, and I have been a MSN customer for
years. The naïve user assumes that the MSN Mail client is the only way to
access his or her MSN E-Mail, because MSN won't tell you any different
unless you twist their arm, but this is not so. Now you can access your
Verizon MSN mail using pop3/smtp with Windows Mail in Vista, with Outlook
2003 and 2007 and Outlook Connector, or using the new Windows Live Mail
client. There are lots of ways to get your mail, even if you elect to keep
the Verizon/MSN email address.

We don't know for sure, officially, that Verizon provides pop3/smtp service,
but there have been some rumors. Outlook Connector and WLM work for sure
with MSN accounts, even partner branded ones.

Cheers,

Earle

MSN Explorer browser actually is a front end for Internet Explorer. My understanding is that it has been tested with IE7, but
not with IE8. That's probably why it doesn't work so well with the second one.
I have Qwest Choice DSL with MSN Premium, and I have been a MSN customer for years. The naïve user assumes that the MSN Mail
client is the only way to access his or her MSN E-Mail, because MSN won't tell you any different unless you twist their arm, but
this is not so. Now you can access your Verizon MSN mail using pop3/smtp with Windows Mail in Vista, with Outlook 2003 and 2007
and Outlook Connector, or using the new Windows Live Mail client. There are lots of ways to get your mail, even if you elect to
keep the Verizon/MSN email address.
We don't know for sure, officially, that Verizon provides pop3/smtp service, but there have been some rumors. Outlook Connector
and WLM work for sure with MSN accounts, even partner branded ones.
Cheers,
Earle

I installed IE8 a few days ago for no good reason other than I like to try
new things. That is most likely the culprit. I will do as you suggest and
try and try again to reach Verizon. If that fails, I'll go back to IE7. I
read some of those other posts. I was unaware of the Vista/MSN compatibility
issue. Now a lot of problems that I've had over the past couple of years
make sense. When my service contract is up, I may go with another provider.
Thanks for the information!

All
I
got was a computer offering to walk me through my email settings (which I
have already checked). No help whatsoever. Like I said, I need a contact

Why would Dell care? Your first place to call for apparent MSN Explorer

your MSN primary account credentials, and it should redirect you to the

Another "gotcha", ordinary MSN accounts convert to free Hotmail/Live with
the @msn.com address if you quit a paid service. Branded accounts like
@q.com do not. If your MSN service with Verizon has an @verizon.com address
or some such, chances are real good that they won't let you take it with
you.

Occasional postings in this group indicate that Verizon MSN accounts have
had pop3/smtp access for some time, but no one really knows for sure. Same
with WebDAV HTTP. This would be useful information to know, if anyone has
it.

When you terminate a service with one of these outfits, it is useful to plan
ahead. Few have done so, judging by the postings we see here.

A secondary account removed from my main MSN subscription long ago continues
to function as a free Hotmail/Live account, albeit with a "@msn.com"
address. It definitely will not work that way with partner-branded
addresses like "@q.com".

Anyone who is listening, if you plan to terminate MSN service it pays to
plan how you will get your mail that is coming to any "@msn.com" or partner
addresses you might have. They won't forward it for you...

Thank you.

Your first line of support is with Verizon since they are responsible for support as an Msn Partner for MSn Premium. (ymmv)

Alternative..work your way through the online support process via support.msn.com
It may redirect you to Verizon once you enter your username and pw.

After Explorer 8 automatically installed I am now unable to open attachments
in my MSN Mail. I have Verizon with MSN Premium. I can open them in my
Hotmail account. The attachments are clean -- I even sent myself one as a
test. It says "Cannot execute command".

I think Explorer and MSN are not comapatable, Should I dump Explorer 8 and
reinstall Explorer 7.

What anti-virus application or security suite is installed, is your
subscription current, and is it supported in IE8? What anti-spyware
applications (other than Defender)? What third-party firewall (if any)?
Were any of these applications running in the background when you installed
IE8?

Has a Norton or McAfee application ever been installed on this machine
(e.g., a free-trial version that came preinstalled when you bought it)?

If you are running MSN Explorer on Vista, after installing IE8, this is a known
issue with attachments. From Berit Benson of the MSN Team see item 2 below:
"Greetings,

MSN 9.6 has been tested with IE8 and there are two known issues.
1) The View – History option does not work. Clicking on the option does
nothing.

2) Vista Only: Error message when attempting to open an email attachment
when User Access Control is enabled.
Workarounds:
Save the attachment and then open it outside of email.
Disable the User Access Control (not recommended)

The MSN Explorer team is working with the IE team on both of these issues.

Thank you,
Berit Benson
Community Leader - MSN Internet Access"

Why would Dell care? Your first place to call for apparent MSN Explorer
problems is your Customer Support number at Verizon. Go here, sign in with
your MSN primary account credentials, and it should redirect you to the
proper site, which will be Verison-specific.

http://support.msn.com/

If they are anything like Qwest they won't be able to help you, but if you
bug them enough they may escalate it to MSN Customer Support.
