My OS is Vista Home Premium. I can't organize or permanently delete any
favorites. Works fine for for present session, but when PC is rebooted, all
previously deleted favorites re-appear. First contacted my ISP MSN Premium in
December 07 and was emailed the now famous fix. It didn't work, folow-up
conversations with provider informed me that it was a server problem and MSN
was working on it. For some reaason MSN won't recognize my password so I can
download the fix.file from the admin user. MSn refers me to MS who wants $ to
fix it. I'm just too stone headed to pay someone to fix their problem. After
this long I'm contemplating taking hostages. Any suggestions?

How long ago did you contact support? I recommend contacting them again -
http://support.msn.com
This can and should be fixed for free and MSN Support has information on how to
resolve the problem. If you problem is not able to be fixed by the front line
techs, please request that it be escalated to another level of support.

Since originally contacting MSN support in Dec 07 I have contacted them every
3 or so weeks, in early March they told me they were aware of and were
working on the server problem and would contact me by email when the problem
was solved. Finally I contacted them again last week, April 24 when finally
a young lady told me she didn't have the expertise and it was a Vista problem
so I should contact MS Vista support. I did that today and was told it was a
Dell support problem because my Vista was installed by Dell at the factory. I
contacted Dell and was told to call MS Vista support since it's a software
problem, so I again contacted MSN Tech Support and was again told MSN didn't
have a fix because it was MS Vista's problem. When I finally back to Vista
support they told me my warranty was up and again they wanted a credit card
# to charge the fee to. I'm exhausted and lost!

I never had the MSN Favorites problem, but just in case I uploaded all my
MSN favorites to http://favorites.live.com and made a backup using the
Export function, which I loaded into IE7. Now I don't have to worry about
Favorites changes being lost, because I have the master copy in a local
file. The conversion process mangled some international characters but I
could live with that.

I feel that MSN is on the way out and my ISP (Qwest) has been pushing people
to upgrade to Windows Live applications instead, with a Member Center page
for managing accounts, etc. It finally appears that all MSN Explorer
functionality is now duplicated either in Live apps or on a web site. If
you are used to the MSN Explorer browser or mail client I can understand not
wanting to change, but I am pretty sure that support expertise is going to
be getting poorer and poorer in this area. If there is an incompatibility
between MSN and Vista well I don't think anyone is really interested in
fixing it.

Hi Kenn,

I am very sorry to hear about your experience. This is definitely not a
Vista issue. It is most likely one of three issues:

1) The server permissions for your account are not correct. We did have
issues where customers did not have write permissions to the server where
their favorites are stored. We updated these permissions and most of them
should be correct. However, it is still possible that we missed your account.
2) The size of your favorites file is too big. We have seen problems with
favorites when the files get above 200Kb. In this case, deleting unused
favorites fixes the issue.
3) There are some corrupted IDs in your favorites file. This is the issue
that the FixFavorites tool was designed to correct.

You can also use that tool to upload your favorites file to the server. If
it returns a 507 error, then most likely your Favorites file is encountering
the size problem.

I will pass on your experience to my support contact, so he can further
educate our team on this.

Please let me know if I can be of further assistance.

Take care,

Perhaps my favorites file is too large, but if I can't delete them, how is
that problem solved? In your scenario, who's problem is it and who has the
fix? When I try to download and run the fixcorruptfavs.hta file. I can't log

Hi Kenn,

This is an MSN issue, and on behalf of MSN I will be glad to serve as your
contact.
I am curious about the comment you made about not being able to log in using
the FixFavorites tool. Are you getting a message that your account is not
set up as a Premium Client user?

If so, please try the following:
1) Right click the fixcorruptfavs.hta file
2) Select Properties
3) Select the General tab
4) Look for a Security note next to an Unblock button (bottom of the screen)
5) Click the Unblock button (if you don't see an Unblock button, then your
hard drives may not be formatted using the NT File System (NTFS)
6) Click OK
7) Run the tool again using your full msn.com username and password.

If this does not fix the problem, please let me know what the exact error is
that you are seeing.

Thanks,

BeritB, the problem was just as you described, I was not set up as a Premium
Client User. I went into the Properties/General Tab of the fixcorruptfavs
file, found the Unblock button and followed your instructions however, did
receive an error message #507 Could not update server with fixed favorite
information. Please try again later.

Hi - I am having the exact same issues as discussed in this posting. I

Hi Kenn,
This is an MSN issue, and on behalf of MSN I will be glad to serve as your
contact.
I am curious about the comment you made about not being able to log in using
the FixFavorites tool. Are you getting a message that your account is not
set up as a Premium Client user?
1) Right click the fixcorruptfavs.hta file
2) Select Properties
3) Select the General tab
4) Look for a Security note next to an Unblock button (bottom of the screen)
5) Click the Unblock button (if you don't see an Unblock button, then your
hard drives may not be formatted using the NT File System (NTFS)
6) Click OK
7) Run the tool again using your full msn.com username and password.
If this does not fix the problem, please let me know what the exact error is
that you are seeing.
Thanks,
Berit

Perhaps my favorites file is too large, but if I can't delete them, how is
that problem solved? In your scenario, who's problem is it and who has the
fix? When I try to download and run the fixcorruptfavs.hta file. I can't log
on, if i could clear that logon hurdle, I might be successful. But MSN says
that that problem is a problem of VIsta. Unfortuneately, I don't have the PC
expertise to know whose problem and who to call. Qwest hands me of to MSN who
tells me to call MSFT who tells me to call Dell who tells me call MSFT.

I am very sorry to hear about your experience. This is definitely not a
1) The server permissions for your account are not correct. We did have
issues where customers did not have write permissions to the server where
their favorites are stored.

When I click Organize on MSNExplorer Favorites, it goes to LOADING and stays there. The problem is 8 months old. MSN Tier Two worked on it for a long time, inducing hours controlling my PC. They said the XMLparser 6 was the problem, it needed to be replaced. The existing XML 6 oarser was removed and replaced. Problem remains. (IE 7 and 8 have been tried several times. Currently IE 8) MSN says entire IE program must be removed and IE 8 then installed, and parser will work. MS Top Tier says IE cannot be removed. Had control of PC for 4 hours today, could not resolve Organize-stops-at-loading problem. Will try again tomorrow. I don't say MSN and now MS aren't trying, but after months, they haven't been able to fix this. Does anyone else have THIS problem, not the "reappearing deletes in Favorites" one?
Thank you

If there is an incompatibility
between MSN and Vista well I don't think anyone is really interested in
fixing it.
