Vista & MSN 9.5 -- msnmetal.dll error
(too old to reply)

I'm continuing to have trouble getting MSN to work properly on my brand new
(Acer) desktop running Vista. Vista gives me a standard "known
incompatibilities" message as regards MSN Explorer, but the links provided
through the solutions wizard merely let me download and reinstall the
incompatible software.

When I click "run program" in the Vista compatibility-issues dialog, the
error message I get says approximately "unable to load required library
msnmetal.dll" (and MSN doesn't load, surprise). Not surprisingly, a search
run in Vista fails to locate any such file on the computer, even when
hidden/system files are included. Googling produces links purporting to lead
to third-party download sites for such a .dll file, but I'm inclined to
distrust those files in this case; if this is truly a Vista compatibility
issue, then I'd expect to find it downloadable from Microsoft/MSN directly --
and so far, I haven't.

So: where am I supposed to get either the missing DLL or the supposed update
to MSN Explorer that fixes the Vista compatibility issues? So far, I have
had zero luck in finding anything even remotely helpful in the MS/MSN
knowledge bases.

Wonders never cease -- it turns out, to my distinct surprise, that Qwest is
indeed prepared to handle MSN-related support issues, and the support agent
successfully talked me through this one. [Answer: fully uninstall MSN, then
put it back; that apparently loaded the proper DLL file, so that MSN Premium
is now working.]

I'd still prefer better online documentation for the problem, but I'm
impressed with the Qwestfolk.

I purchased a Dell computer Jan. 30; info on Dell's website had said it would come with either XP or Vista; it came with Vista. I am unable to install MIcrosoft MSN, I am unable to download MSN, even with long and patient technical support from MSN (they finally told me it was not compatible with Vista). Microsoft MSN is not compatible with Microsoft Vista!!! So, I STILL have no Internet Access and even tho Dell has told me twice, on Feb 18 and again on March 3, that they were shipping me a replacement computer with Microsoft XP...they have not. They continue to put me off...I am NOT happy. Any advice anyone?? Dell says I can install XP on the same hard drive which currently has Vista, with no problem(s). I am 65 and NOT computer literate.

MSN 9.5 is compatible with Vista. I am in fact running MSN with Vista
Ultimate on the PC on which I am now replying. 1. Start IE 2. search on
member center 3. download current software. You must have a subscription ie.
MSN Dial up or if you have DSL then Msn Premium. Don't let anyone tell you
that Vista and MSN are incompatible it is simply not true. My PC is much
older than yours and as I said I have MSN 9.5 running under Vista.

Hope this helps,

If you have an MSN account, that you feel you must use, call up MSN support
and ask for instructions on how to get internet access using the built-in
dial up networking. This is pretty easy using earlier versions of Windows.
You get a local access number, which you may already have, you put
"msn/username" under user and you use your regular password. Otherwise,
cancel your MSN account and try AOL, Earthlink or someone local from your
yellow pages.

If you post through EggHeadCafe.com it is redundant to say that you are not
computer literate.

Look, why would you want to change your Dell running Vista for XP ? DONT ! I can understand your frustration with not being able to access MSN Explorer, but keep in mind that you have other options such as Internet Explorer 7 which is available on Vista, if you would like to check your E-mail just log in to your account.

This POST is also for other people having the same problem.. MSN has made MSN Explorer compatible with VISTA only for those people who have an MSN Premium account, meaning that the rest who have a FREE hotmail account will have to wait until sometime in APRIL ! for the release to be compatible with VISTA.
I can understand how DUAL BOOTING your PC with VISTA and XP might be complicated for a 65 year old person like yourself and not PC Savvy... but my advice is KEEP VISTA and wait for MSN to dish out MSN explorer in APRIL 07... rememebr that VISTA just came out and many software companies were not ready, such as Apple and I Tunes.... and yes MSN.

so give it some time until everyone gets accustomed to VISTA.

I used to work for Microsoft in network development. That is why I will
never knowingly buy, use or install any of their products that has less than
a YEAR of marketplace exposure. I got the free Office 2007 download mail
too, but I just ignore it as I have recently made the successful upgrade to
Office 2003. Maybe Vista SP1 will be stable, who knows?

Don't believe anything posted from "EggHeadCafe.com - .NET Developer Portal

Well, running that compatibility thing didn't work for me. Any other suggestions, as I'm getting the same thing as everyone else and the Msn Explorer keeps saying (even after uninstalling then installing again) that it needs to be repaired... However, when I click on that it justs redirects me back to the Microsoft downloads page, which then doesn't work for me after I've downloaded it. It also says that MSN Messenger Service is not installed on the comp, but I follow all the prompts to no avail :(( Any other suggestions???
