If you are referring to MS Outlook Express, well; MSOE never had a spell
checker. Ever. They have always "stolen" access to some unrelated,
co-installed Microsoft product, such as MS Office (up to, but not including,
Office 2007), or MS Works (except for later versions; not Works 8, which
came with my HP Pavilion m7590n, for example).

MSOE is no longer supported; has not been since MSFT stopped working on
MSIE6. You'll have to find a third party source for your spell checker.
Search the groups for Bruce Hagen's responses to "French spell check", or
similar subject lines.

The Office 2000 Proofing Tools should work with MSN, although to my
knowledge no one in this forum has tried it. If you do get it to work
please report back here. Use custom installation, install only Proofing
Tools, nothing else. Since Office 2000 doesn't have to be activated you can
dispense with that complication. Works may work, but as Miller says it
depends on the version.

I interviewed with the Works group at one time and it is my understanding
that the Works word processor is a Microsoft product. I met maybe five
developers and this appeared to be the entire development team. The odd
thing is that Office would place their proofing tools under
%ProgramFiles%\Common Files\Microsoft Shared. This indicates at least some
thought to have a shared set of common tools, but the original plan appears
to have gone south. Perhaps they just couldn't agree on the API.

For people who don't have a compatible version of Office handy and don't
want to take Microsoft's solution of a free spell checker, there are several
for-pay spell checkers available.

It is part of an Office suite(retail or provided by a computer manufacturer).

Do you own Office ? If so, do you have your Office CD's. Proofing Tools are part of those CD's and accessible when running setup
and choosing Custom as the installation option.

If not, you will need a third party spell checker.

More appropriate advice would have been that if Office 2007 is installed to only install the Spelling and Proofing Tools for Office
2003. Negating the use of Office 2007, while an option if wishing to revert to Office 2003, is not a universal solution for all.

In the case of the op and many others, I would suspect that some hard-earned dollars were spent on acquiring Office 2007, thus a
free third party spell checker should be quite suitable to address an email client no longer being developed by Msft.

Install Office 2003 from CD, choose "Custom Install", make everything "Not
Available" except for Proofing Tools. MSN Email client no longer being
developed by MSFT? ;^)

The preferred way to run Office 2003 components alongside Office 2007 is to
install the older version first, then the newer version. There are other
"issues" with running multiple versions of Office, but you shouldn't run
into much trouble just keeping the older Proofing Tools. These articles may
help.

Microsoft Updates may have a few more items to hide when Office 03 and 07 components are both installed <g>

Installing Office 03/07 updates will most likely make OL the default email client...though there is a kb article with respect to
OL03.

Outlook 2003 is incorrectly configured as the default mail client every time that you perform an Office installation or Office
update that modifies Outlook
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/933450

SYMPTOMS
When you install Microsoft Office 2003, an Office 2003 service pack, or an Office 2003 update package, the default mail client that
is configured in Microsoft Windows is removed. Instead, Microsoft Office Outlook 2003 is set as the default mail client.

Note the article does not mention OL2007. My preference, like others, is OL03 and/or 07 for my primary pop3 addresses, and WLM for
Http accounts(including Google and Yahoo), thus maintaining or desiring OL to remain the default client is not an issue.

I am suggesting installation of Office 2003 Proofing Tools only. This can
be done from any Office 2003 product or suite install CD. Since it does not
install Outlook, I do not anticipate that there would be any problems. I do
not believe that Office 2003 Proofing Tools would interfere with the 2007
versions, since as I recall they are installed in different locations. As
far as I know, this would also work for Office 2000 or 2002 Proofing Tools.

I have a copy of the Proofing Tools 2003 product which I plan to install on
a Vista system when I get time. Theoretically, this will give me spell
check in 54 languages in Windows Mail and possibly MSN Explorer too.

That's because the program interface to the spell checkers is different. It
appears that Office program managers couldn't talk the French suppliers into
updating their code. That's why French appears as the only option in OE and
MSN after one upgrades to Office 2007. I'll let you know how it works out.

SYMPTOMS
When you install Microsoft Office 2003, an Office 2003 service pack, or
an Office 2003 update package, the default mail client that is
configured in Microsoft Windows is removed. Instead, Microsoft Office
Outlook 2003 is set as the default mail client.
</qp>
Note the article does not mention OL2007. My preference, like others,
is OL03 and/or 07 for my primary pop3 addresses, and WLM for Http
accounts(including Google and Yahoo), thus maintaining or desiring OL to
remain the default client is not an issue.

Install Office 2003 from CD, choose "Custom Install", make everything
"Not Available" except for Proofing Tools. MSN Email client no longer
being developed by MSFT? ;^)
The preferred way to run Office 2003 components alongside Office 2007
is to install the older version first, then the newer version. There
are other "issues" with running multiple versions of Office, but you
shouldn't run into much trouble just keeping the older Proofing Tools.
These articles may help.

More appropriate advice would have been that if Office 2007 is
installed to only install the Spelling and Proofing Tools for Office
2003. Negating the use of Office 2007, while an option if wishing to
revert to Office 2003, is not a universal solution for all.
In the case of the op and many others, I would suspect that some
hard-earned dollars were spent on acquiring Office 2007, thus a free
third party spell checker should be quite suitable to address an email
client no longer being developed by Msft.

I think that there has been exactly one update to Office 2003 Proofing Tools. That is SP3.
OL 2003 feature. Not sure this applies to OL 2007.
This appears to be the Office 2003 spell checker. Same files, same location, etc.
That's because the program interface to the spell checkers is different. It appears that Office program managers couldn't talk
the French suppliers into updating their code. That's why French appears as the only option in OE and MSN after one upgrades to
Office 2007. I'll let you know how it works out.

WM has a spell checker without Office installed.
No German, no Portuguese, no English (UK) except perhaps in markets where
those languages are spoken. Microsoft seems to be totally blind to the idea
that as an American I might someday want to use a British spelling, type a
note in Portuguese, whatever. In other parts of the world this sort of
behavior is fairly normal.
Post by ...winston
Office2007 has almost 5 dozen languages options
At $24.95 each, and a bear to install. Install program consults a "vendor
of record" web site that is supposed to validate your Product ID, but they
already lost or discarded your purchase information as soon as they charged
your credit card account. Then if you want to reinstall the language option
later you have to send a challenge key to Office customer support, based on
computer parameters, zodiac signs and so forth. They send you a response
key that is only good on that computer and that installation of operating
system. Hopefully the challenge/response key mechanism doesn't experience
bit rot over time.

Office 2003 Proofing Tools was 54 languages, Product Key and direct
activation through product MSFT activation servers. This is progress.
Progress to Microsoft is being able to charge more for the same product
functionality or less.

Also Office 2007 language proofing tools don't work in any known application
programs except Office 2007 components. These people are experts at
breaking APIs, and have been for as long as I have been acquainted with
their products.

At any rate, it doesn't seem to work. I had hoped to test 2003 proofing
tools with MSN Explorer too, but I couldn't get that program to install
without making Windows exit because of a critical error inside of one
minute. Good thing they thought to include System Restore and Safe Mode.

Downloading a program in XP or Vista usually provides a prompt to save to a location or displays the location during the
download(if IE is set to download without prompting). Look in that location for the previous downloaded file..

Fyi..Outlook Express and Msn software never had an included spell checker always borrowing from an existing installation(Office or
Microsoft Works Suite, the latter included Word and its spell checker).
Installation of Office 2007 with its included spell checker removes the prior Office or Works Suite Word spell check files for
English, German and Spanish.

This is undocumented but English, French and Spanish Proofing Tools from
2003 can be installed after installing Office 2007. This is done in the
"Custom Setup" screen by selecting "Choose advanced customization of
applications". On the next screen under "Office Shared Features" select
"Proofing Tools" to "Run (all) from My Computer". I did this several months
ago and English, French and Spanish spell and grammar checking are all
working normally, including spell check in Outlook Express. As I indicated
in another post you can still find Word 2000 for $15.97 and up on Amazon
Marketplace. There is also Ebay, your local used computer store, etc. The
Proofing Tools from this product and also from Office 2002 should work with
MSN and/or Outlook Express.

Although installation is somewhat difficult if you want a Microsoft-only
solution this is the way to do it. You have to arrange to get the Proofing
Tools "activated" but that is possible too. Then when you install Office
Updates you have to accept a number of Office 2000, 2002 or 2003 updates.
This is only a minor annoyance.

I would like to know if the 2007 versions of the Proofing Tools contain new
functionality, but so far all I know is that they are incompatible with
Outlook Express.

To get the "original" spell checker back, uninstall Office 2007 and then
reinstall Office 2003. Now you "may" be able to install Office 2007 and
retain the Office 2003 proofing tools, but although this would work in
theory I have been unable to do so. Otherwise you have to find and install
one of the available free spell checkers so you can have spell checking in
MSN along side of Office 2007.

I assume that you posted this new message in an old thread, because you just

Install Office 2003 Proofing Tools on top of Office 2007? I got into big
trouble trying that and had to run System Restore to fix the resulting mess.
While it would seem to correct the Proofing Tools/MSN/OE incompatibility, it
confuses the Office installer.

Office 2007 applications should work "in theory" with Office 2003 Proofing
Tools installed first and left in place during the upgrade, but I don't
think I want to try that either, not to get a spell checker in OE or MSN.

I think the best advice is to do what Microsoft says and install a free
spell checker. Or use Outlook 2007, already compatible with Proofing Tools
from 2007, or one of the email clients that contains its own spell checker
such as Windows Live Mail or Windows Mail.

Agreed, where its applicable. Since not all posters with issues in this thread have clarified the email clients(MSN Premium and/or
OE) that lose spell check when Office 2007 is installed.

Windows Mail doesn't apply to those using XP(OE), or switching to Vista from OE with a functional Hotmail WebDAV account or MSN
Premium(XP and Vista).

There is one other option for Msn and Outlook 2007 in both XP and Vista use the OLC(highly recommend the beta since problems with
the production version have occured ever since the beta was released)

I tried the last one, recommended by the Outlook Tips web site, installing
the proofing tools from Office 2003 over an existing installation of Office
2007. On running Office Update from
http://office.microsoft.com/en-us/downloads/maincatalog.aspx, the computer
failed Office Genuine Advantage, because Office 2003 had been installed but
not activated. I chose to work around this by installing Word 2003, running
it once, saying yes to the product activation screen, and then uninstalling
it. The next time I ran Word 2007 it found it necessary to run Setup again.

Now at Office Update it is saying that I need to install Office 2003 SP3 and
a number of additional Office 2003 updates. Well, I will humor it, but as
of now Office 2007 is acting normally and I have English (US, UK, Oz and
Canada), French (France, Canada), Spanish (Traditional) and Italian (Italy)
spell checkers available in Outlook Express. (Italian is another Office 2007
spell checker that works in harmony with OE, in addition to French.)

If you can't follow the above paragraph, or the steps might be confusing,
then maybe the method described on the Outlook Tips web site would cause you
problems. I cannot say that I recommend it for general use, because of the
number of steps where something might go wrong. You have to select Custom
Installation of Office 2003, and "Not Available" for all components except
Proofing Tools. Microsoft also does not recommend mixing and matching of
components from different versions of Office.

I am not yet 100% sure that this installation will not give me future
problems.

Now Hines claims knowledge of Russian. Where will it end?

Cheers,

Earle

Open your email page, click tools click options, when the options page opens
click on spelling in the header bar. Make sure you have a check in "Always

Now open create mail for a new email, type in misspelled words, then click

You're lucky! MSN now requires that people install Microsoft Office/Word,
even when someone doesn't need or want the program. I just got off the phone
with those people and they told me that people need to have Microsoft Office
2003 English Language Proofing Tool. The person I talked to also said that
Microsoft is assuming that people are now buying computers with Microsoft
Office/Word pre-installed. So, if you have a computer that is slightly
older, you either have to do without a spell checker altogether or cough up a
huge sum of money to buy a program you don't want or need. I wasted my time
and effort to download and install the trial version of Office 2007 only to
find that the spell checker is incompatible with MSN. They don't even bother
telling people which version they have to install. They told me that they're
"working on the problem", too. But, I was also told that MSN has no
intention of simply just putting the spell checker back into the email
program, because Microsoft is trying to force people to either buy new
computers or buy their Microsoft Office program. I saw how much money they
want for the program, too. I think this is outrageous for a program I don't
even need or want. It might be fine for people who already have the program
pre-installed on their newer computers, or for people who have a real use for
the program. For me it's not fine--not for the amount of money they want for
a program that I have very little use for. I can use the free program Open
Office if I need to write and print out a document at home, and it has a
converter for sending documents to people who use Microsoft Word. One way or
the other, Microsoft is trying to force people to spend money. There is
nothing wrong with my computer I have now or it's OS, so I probably have to
just be grateful that I'm not a lousy speller.

intention of simply just putting the spell checker back into the email
program, because Microsoft is trying to force people to either buy new
computers or buy their Microsoft Office program.

My email spell checker has disapeared. I thnk it happened when I upgraded to
Office 2007. All the dictionaries are gone except French. Does anyone know
how to get the spell checker back?

I don't understand the question. Install English Language Proofing Tools
from Office 2000, 2002 or 2003 and they will be available under Vista or any
operating system where you can successfully install them. I am not entirely
clear that they don't interfere with the tools included with Office 2007,
but they don't "seem" to. You can still pick up copies of these versions
from Ebay, Amazon Marketplace and other vendors reasonably cheap.

Will the Office 2003 English Proofing Tool fix work with VISTA OC?

I found a copy of Microsoft Word 2000 for sale on Amazon Marketplace for
$15.97. English Language Proofing Tool from 2000, 2002 or 2003 will work
for spell checking MSN. If you plan to use this with Office 2007 on the
same computer, do Custom Install and install only the English Language
Proofing Tool. Otherwise, Word 2007 is going to give you problems
repeatedly trying to "register" itself.

So, if you have a computer that is slightly
older, you either have to do without a spell checker altogether or
cough
up a
huge sum of money to buy a program you don't want or need. I wasted my time
and effort to download and install the trial version of Office 2007
only
to
find that the spell checker is incompatible with MSN. They don't even bother
telling people which version they have to install. They told me that they're
"working on the problem", too. But, I was also told that MSN has no
