I get a message that says windows mail no longer supports the http servers
used by Hotmail and other web-based email prividers. Click Back button to
set up a different email account or se other options for accessing your
web-based email. I don't know what to do. I have had this email account for
many years.

Windows Mail(inlcuded with Vista) never supported the http protocol for Hotmail accounts.
Windows Mail does support pop3 for Hotmail accounts. As of Feb 2009, all Hotmail type accounts(Hotmail.com, Live.com and Msn.com)
are pop3 capable.

Hotmail and MSN Accounts POP3/SMTP Access

To setup a Hotmail type account in Windows Mail(one must) enter a false email address..e.g. ***@mailhot.com, when setting up
the account, once all configuration is complete, edit the false email address to the correct. Not doing so will cause Windows Mail
to prompt that Hotmail accounts are not supported(this is due to the fact that development and the ceased on Windows Mail over 3.5
yrs ago freezing the code, well before pop3 access was capable for all Hotmail type accounts)

It is true that Windows Mail (released version) never supported the http
protocol for Hotmail accounts, but the message that one sees says that
"Windows Mail no longer supports the http servers". The message also refers
to a non-existent Back button. This is a Vista problem, and never fixed in
any update.

I believe that the work around is to set up pop3/smtp address using a fake
server name, e.g. ***@notmsn.com, and then change it to the correct
address after the account is set up, as in Mr. Bear's message. That is, if
you want to use Windows Mail with this account.

Assuming Windows Mail is your default Mail Client:

Use the Configuration Settings on this page:
http://mailcall.spaces.live.com/Blog/cns!CC9301187A51FE33!49799.entry

NB: Set Outgoing server (SMTP) to Port 587, not Port 25!

Windows Mail's new account wizard is hard-coded to reject ***@hotmail.com
and ***@msn.com addresses. When you enter your email address during setup,
use a dummy one (e.g., ***@notmail.com). After you've finished, go back
and change the email address to the correct one.
