Reggie, renaming the files is only step 1. You then need to open each message
and import/save them into another email program and then finally get them back
to MSN Explorer.
Do you still have access to the old computer? If so, open MSN Explorer on it and
use the option under email options to Export/backup to an MSNBAK file. Copy that
file to the new PC and use the Import feature to restore the MSNBAK file. These
options are under the Email Options in MSN Explorer.
Note, too, that you can get help from MSN Support. http://support.msn.com for
options.
Since you have the db30 folder from the old PC, though, the manual restore
process will work using Windows Live Mail as the intermediate program. And, yes,
it will be a lot of work.
I'll paste the steps below again.
The email files are all stored within the user profile folder. For 9.0/9.1 and
9.5/9.6/10 they are slightly different. In 9.0/9.1 they can be found here:
C:\Documents and Settings\{userID}\Local Settings\Application
Data\Microsoft\MSN\db\
In 9.5/9.6/10, change \db\ to \db30\
In order to see the folders and the files within them, you need to set the
Windows Explorer options to show hidden files and folders and possibly system
files.
Inside this db30 folder, you will find files with an extension of .sdf - ignore
these. You're interested in the ones that look like: username-msn-com.1a0, 1a1,
etc.
and also within the folders \Mail(MSN user ID)\ with extensions of .000,
starting with stm0x...
You can copy and rename these files to have an extension of .eml.
Double-clicking them will open them in Outlook Express, Windows Mail or Windows
Live Mail, depending on what's installed. You can then move them to a folder in
OE/WM/WLM if desired for future access or import into MSN mail, or you can send
them back to yourself for filing within the MSN client program.
On 10/5/07, "ComputerGuy" posted this tip in the MSN Discussion newsgroup:
"...here is one little piece of advise. After renaming about 50 of the thousand
plus emails it hit to me to just go into windows explorer, tools, folder options
and add file the file extension of .000 and give it the same properties as a
..eml file thus saving me hours of having to rename all the files. Not really
needed when it is only a couple of messages but when there are hundreds or even
thousands of files, this will save much pain and suffering."
And, Earle H. offered an additional tip:
Open a Command Prompt (Start/Run/cmd) and navigate to the folder that you copied
the contents of the \db30 folder to and type the following command -
REN *.000 *.EML
And then press enter. This will rename all files in that folder with an
extension of 000 to now have an extension of eml.

Post by reggie7This is my first post on a discussion board.
I tried the 6 steps provided in this chain/discussion. The result was that
I saw some of my many (MSN local) folders but most were not there (or
visible). I have folders with names from A to Z. The non-standard folders
which I created that were there are "Inbox_Saved", "KEEP_SAVE_IMPORTANT", and
"Software Development". The "Software Development" folder has about 3
subfolders. I tried the tip about renaming the "*.000" files to "*.EML".
There was no change. I was still only able to see the my local folders as
mentioned above. So, it made no difference. I am using the most recent MSN
Explorer software (ver. 9.60.0053.2200). I downloaded it and installed it
before I brought the MSN email folders/files over via EasyTransfer.
The MSN email folders brought over from my old laptop were "DB" and "DB30".
I brought these email folders over from my old laptop (running Win XP) to my
new laptop (running Win 7) via the MS EasyTransfer app.
Can you please help me resolve this so that I can have access to all my
email folders and emails?
Thank you for your help.
Reggie

Good idea and simple enough to do, but it didn't work for me.
Here's my situation. When my PC boots up one is presented with the option
to log in different users, (me, my wife, my son, etc.) If I log on as me and
then log into MSN I am presented the option of which e-mail account to log
into. If I log into mine (I am the system administrator), My MSN e-mail
works as it should with all local folders visible. (The MSN Premium patch
from Qwest seemed to fix mine ok).
But... If my wife logs in with her logon and into her MSN account, no mail
whatsoever is visible, neither current mail or stored mail.
Now, I I log into the PC as me but then log into her e-mail account, the new
mail (that stored on the server) is visible, but not the local folders (much
like what you'd get if you logged into Hotmail via the web).
I can dig into her db and db30 folders and see the stored mail there and, if
I rename it with .eml extentions, get Outlook Express to view it. What I'd
like though is to make it visible again to her using MSN (the way it used to
be).
It's bad enough when you screw up your own computer though a blunder, but
when you're sailing along peacefully and one night the "evil Microsoft"
sneaks a not-ready-for-primetime "upgrade" onto your system... well.... it
really tightens your jaws.

Post by Peter PetrelliHey guys, I found a fix which seems to work a treat!
1. Close all MSN windows
2. Press the Windows key and the letter R (Or go to Start > Run)
3. Paste "%userprofile%\Local Settings\Application Data\Microsoft\MSN" into
the run box and press OK
4. Rename "db30" to "db.old" and "db" to "db30"
5. Sign back into MSN Premium
6. Enjoy your stored messages once more!
