Why did I have to make up a non-existent email address to sign up for this
community?
I was trying to get on here to ask a question for my dad. It asked for the
email address, so I entered his address, which end "@verizon.net". Well, that
was an invalid email address or something. It said @verizon.net was an
existing domain (well, duh!). To get in, I had to make up a domain for after
the @-sign, but now, of course, my dad won't get any email (like when you
click "Notify me of replies").
What's the deal with that? How do I correct the email address?
Thanks,
-Jeff

That would depend on which client program or web site you are using to
access this community. For example, I am using Outlook Express under XP to
post to the NNTP server msnews.microsoft.com. You may be using some other
method. My address is real but contains "_nospam_" to foil address
harvesting robots.
This is a user supported forum, and unless you ask real nice, replies will
probably appear on the forum and not at your reply address. What exactly is
the question?
Cheers,
Earle

You can obtain a LiveID at http://account.live.com, using your existing email
address to create a LiveID or create a new @live.com or @hotmail.com email
address and identity.
Other than that, I don't know what you did to post here and why the existing
email address was reported to be invalid.

I am using this forum the only way I know how: via web browser.
I posted my original question in a different forum. It is being discussed.
My question here is why they wanted a non-existent email address. It is
really annoying because I did not know what to enter, and there was no
guidance -- except to say that I could not enter @verizon.net. Couldn't they
just ask for a username or something? It was really annoying. Now I can't
change it, either.
But, if you click "Notify me of replies", you are supposed to get an email
telling you when people reply (I would never expect someone to email to me
special -- how annoying would that be?). And I want to make sure I receive
that email.

Which web site?
Which web site? Like the man said if you are using a Microsoft web site
then it will probably want a Live ID, which is more or less a Hotmail,
Live.com or MSN email address. There are a zillion ways to get into these
forums, including Google, your ISP news server, Microsoft's news server,
EggHeadCafe.com and probably lots of them that I don't know about. If you
are getting in through a Microsoft web site, then not just any E-Mail
address will do, but a Microsoft one must be used.
If it was this web site or something connected, then that is the case.
http://www.microsoft.com/communities/default.mspx
If Google Groups work better for you, then you can access the same group
here:
http://groups.google.com/group/microsoft.public.msn.discussion/topics
Microsoft did not invent discussion groups. They just take advantage of the
technology for their own purposes. Many of the web sites that access these
forums require you to prove who you are. Register for an "account", give
them your E-Mail address, and then reply to an E-Mail that they send to that
address. Having the replies sent to your dad is going to be chancy unless
you have access to his E-Mail to set the link up.
I don't know which web site would reject "@verizon.net" as a valid E-Mail
address, and allow you to enter a fake one.
Cheers,
Earle

I really dislike the web browser for these news groups. They are news
groups, and they are propagated using NNTP; which, IMHO, is best viewed using
an NNTP client instead of an HTTP client. However...
When I tried to reply to your article, I was asked to sign in with a Windows
Live ID (which I do have). This ID has an associated email address, which was
pre-loaded for the sign in field. I would probably have to clear cookies to
get a reply compose window without a pre-loaded sign in.
They want a non-existent email address in order to foil spammers and
viruses, both of which harvest NNTP posting email addresses from these groups.
If you must use an HTTP client (web browser) for access, I'd suggest signing
up for a Windows Live ID. You can use a 'verizon.net' email address for the
account.
Having a Windows Live ID would allow you to receive email notices. BTW, I
normally post using a proper NNTP client (40tude Dialog; though MS Outlook
Express would also work). Clients generally can't be configured to receive
email notices, but one specific Microsoft desktop client is designed to work
with the "Microsoft Communities": Windows Live Mail.
http://get.live.com/wlmail/overview?wa=wsignin1.0
One thing that I have done is to create a user name with this web access
which matches my normal user name I use for NNTP client posting. In ths way,
anybody searching for posts I have made will find them, regardless of the
client I use. I have posted here useing:
MS Outlook Express
Windows Live Mail
Mozilla Thunderbird (NNTP client)
Mozilla Firefox (HTTP client)
And other clients (both NNTP and HTTP). I have used other user names in the
past, but try to stick with a common user name, now, for consitency.

The web based forum requires a valid Live ID to post. A valid Live ID is
also an email address.
To use the nttp based forums, a local news client may require or prompt for
an email address when the server to access this group is setup. You may use
a valid email address(if you wish people to respond by mail to one of your
post) or a false email address. Note that use of a valid email address can
be harvested from the post properties and is routinely done by many email
harvesting programs focused on newsgroups.
An example of a false(munged)email address may be of the form of an existing
valid.
e.g ***@nospam#graceland.com. Its optional to inform people to remove the
nospam# if sending mail.

All caps by netiquette standards is hard to read and by some considered rude.
