Discussion:
MSN Photo downloading has long pauses between photos

I don't know if MSN is trying to wean me from using its photo sharing or if
I have some sort of configuration problem. I'd appreciate any input from
anyone that may be a regular user of the MSN photo sharing feature.

I have a MSN Premium membership. I've had it for many years and over that
time I've seen the photo sharing service vary between fast and reliable and
slow and unreliable many, many times. Nevertheless, it's still my favorite
photo sharing facility -- when it is working correctly.

My computer is direct connected to a Linksys router and wireless access
point device (WRT 160N) that is connected to a Comcast cable modem.
Everything but the MSN photo downloading works with amazing speed and
complete reliability, including the connections and file sharing between the
3 other computers that connect to the router wirelessly.

When downloading photos there is a pause that can be as long as 1 minute
between downloading each photos. Sometimes it will apparently give up and
skip a photo. When it does decide to download, it does it in the wink of an
eye -- just zip and done. If I re-download it the pauses are the same but
it will skip different photos, sometimes just giving up and ending with a
report of the photos that it couldn't download.

(1) I have removed and reinstalled my MSN software but nothing changed. (2)
I have connected my computer directly to the Comcast modem, completely
by-passing the router, but nothing changes. (3) I have disabled the MSN
McAfee virus checking but nothing changes. (4) I have turned off the
firewall -- I use only the Windows firewall -- but nothing changes and,
finally, (5) I stopped the Windows Defender service but still no change.

Are others experiencing this when downloading photos from the MSN photo
servers? Does anyone know what can cause the pause between photo files?

Thanks in advance for any help you can provide.

I have been a MSN Premium customer for years, most recently through my Qwest
Broadband with MSFT account. I have been using Kodak Gallery for years and
I am happy with it. There is a requirement that you order something once a
year from them, but a coffee mug or a small book of snapshots is enough to
cover it. I tried uploading photos to MSN once and my reaction was "Are you
****ing kidding me?" Just because it is from Microsoft doesn't mean it is
good.

Thanks Earl. I didn't know that I was revealing me e-mail address. I
assume that it is coming from the info in account properties so I just
changed that. Hopefully...

As for MSN Photo sharing, I like it and would like to keep using it. In the
past, with the high speed Comcast cable service, it has run like a scaled
dog.

Regards,

Howard

Please clarify 'MSN Photo Servers' ???

Are you referring to the obsolete MSN Spaces ? (first replaced in 2006 with Windows Live Spaces and in May 2008 with Windows Live
SkyDrive's Photo option)

Uploading Photos is functional with two Active X(controls) found in IE as add-ons(Msn Photo Upload and Windows Live Photo Upload)

Downloading from Windows Live Skydrive is managed by the browser and the o/s. Photos can be individually downloaded or the full
folder content as a zip file or directly into Windows Live Photo Gallery.

Thanks Winston. I tried Windows Live Mail -- I don't know what the
"SkyDrive" option is -- but when I click on download photos for the same
e-mail message it brings up the MSN browser Photos Plus page just like it
does when initiated from within the MSN browser.
