Install\Uninstall Problems MSN 9.6

Hi .. I have read many of the posts on here pertaining to installing and
uninstalling issues with MSN Premium 9.6, yet I have not read anything that
actually has helped my fix my existing issue. I am running new install of
Windows Vista Home Premium 32 bit version. I was able to download the
installation software fine and started the installation with no problems. I
had gotten to the point where it asks for email address and password and
verifies your name on the account and so on. Then it failed I can not
remember the exact error. Either way when I restart the system and try to
restart the install I am getting the 235 error stating I do not have a
connection to the internet. I have tried shutting off all firewalls,
spyware, antivirus anything that could be blocking it in any manner and still
get the error. Unfortunately I can not uninstall it either to start over
because I get the same 235 error. I have also tried getting the latest
version of Windows Uninstaller Tool and that does not even see it on the
system. So any suggests or solutions would be appreciated. I would be happy
to just run my Windows Live Mail etc. but there are others in my household
that have really grown attached to the MSN interface. The only thing I have
not tried yet is I have seen where a someone suggested that sometimes Windows
Office Live Add-In can effect the installation problem so I have not tried
uninstalling this feature yet. Thanks ...

Have you contacted msn support or the partner providing the internet service...or is this a msn premium subscription with a byo isp
plan ?

If the latter...
http://support.msn.com
sign in with Live ID and select Msn Premium Internet Software
or
https://support.msn.com/default.aspx?productkey=msnclient

As a premium subcriber you are entitled to Chat, Email and Phone support for both Customer Service and Technical Support..
- the premium msn plan is the only plan that provides all three options for both CS and TS

No I have not contacted MSN customer support yet on this issue. Although I
have contacted them in the past on the same issue and it was so long ago now
I do not remember how I did actually resolve it but it was not with support.
I currently have my support for MSN through the Qwest support team. If I do
not find the answer or the fix for this on my own I will contact them.
Thanks Winston for the support info ... :)

I had precisely the same problem in trying to remove MSN to do a reinstall.
I ended up removing all WL programs, including the Windows Office Live
Add-in update and that allowed me to complete the removal. I then loaded
IE8 and reinstalled MSN and all is well so far. I have had a number of
problems installing IE8 over MSN (and still am having trouble with IE8 and
Windows Mail), but as of this date, it appears that it is possible to load
IE8 first. I would make sure you have a backup of your messages and address
book in place before doing so, however. Qwest told a customer 10 days ago
that IE8 and MSN Premium are incompatible and that was the extent of the
tech support, period. Good luck!

Thanks, I will give that a try and post back results. I know IE8 and MSN can
co-exist because I am running them both on my other system. I just was
frustrated with this 235 error and not seeming to find a work around. Thanks
Again.

If Qwest is your provider, like other branded partner programs you may or may not be able to use the direct Msn support links I
provided. Your options may be available via logon to the Qwest support site.

Greetings,

The most likely reason for the 235 error has to do with a registry value
being too long. Qwest support SHOULD be familiar with this issue and can
walk you through the process of updating this value. Because this involves
modifying the registry, I won't post instructions on the web and instead
direct folks to contact support.

Thank you,

Ok in answer to my problem everyone. All I had to do is uninstall the
Windows Office Live Add-In and MSN installer worked like a charm. Also MSN
explorer and MSN email opens and runs without fail. Such a simple fix for
this instance, surprised there is not more info on these things not playing
well together. Thanks everyone for you help and input pertaining to this
matter, much appreciated.

Just want to say Thanks Dar for posting the fix you found. I've been very
frustrated by a 235 error that's been keeping me locked out of over 4K emails
I was trying to export when my MSN originally crashed. Your mention of the
the office add-in helped me do a clean un/re-install. High-Five!

Dar - Thanks for the update. Uninstalling Windows Office Live Add-in was a
success. I 've been trying to reinstall MSN Explorer 9.6. for a week. My
problem was that the MSN Connection Center continued to stop working and then
the installtion wizard failed. Thanks again.

If Qwest is your provider, like other branded partner programs you may or may not be able to use the direct Msn support links I
provided. Your options may be available via logon to the Qwest support site.
Good luck.

Hi All!

Well, I too had a he__ of a time getting this fixed. I have Qwest as my
provider and they could not help at all. The issue was the same for me - I
did uninstall MSN (Never did have Live Office Add-IN) and I also uninstalled
Connection Center. I still could not run the MSN installer, yep received
error 235. The fix, told to me by a contact at MS, was to delete (after
backing up the reg first of course) the Post Platform folder in the location
below.

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Internet
Settings\5.0\User Agent\Post Platform]

That was all it took. I launched the MSN installer and it worked fine.

As a postscipt to this ordeal:

I spent over 4 hours of both my and QWest's (well, their contractors in
India) time. I suppose the final cost from India was about a buck fifty
(US), but I sure felt my time was worth a heck of a lot more. At one point
they insisted that I uninstall IE8 and install IE7 - NOT! I knew that could
not be the issue, it made no sense at all, but of course support in India is
not paid to think outside the little box they put them in. Don't get me
wrong, I work in Tech (SAS programer / Analyst) with a lot of folks from
India and I am proud to work with them all. However any time I have
contact with a call center in India I experience the same result - the utter
inability to resolve the issue, and with a lack of passion and interest (to
solve the issue) that is equal to that inability.

Forgive me, I really don't mean to rant - but I am just a bit put out about
all the time that I wasted on the phone with non-support. Hopefully someone
still looking for resolution will find this thead before they waste as much
time, or more, as wll.

Best Regards,

Rick

Dar - Thanks for the update. Uninstalling Windows Office Live Add-in was a
success. I 've been trying to reinstall MSN Explorer 9.6. for a week. My
problem was that the MSN Connection Center continued to stop working and then
the installtion wizard failed. Thanks again.

Greetings,
The most likely reason for the 235 error has to do with a registry value
being too long. Qwest support SHOULD be familiar with this issue and can
walk you through the process of updating this value. Because this involves
modifying the registry, I won't post instructions on the web and instead
direct folks to contact support.

I uninstalled MSN and while trying to reinstall was constantly getting the
235 error when I launched the program via the downloaded install package from
MSN. I tried all of the fixes that I had seen on various sites. Deleting the
Post Platform folder in the registry, regsvr32 msxml3.dll and regsvr32
vbscript.dll, removing all Windows Live software etc.
What finally worked was in Add / Remove programs, MSN was still listed. I
clicked Change and it gave me the choice to check for updates. (my memory of
the wording might be a little off) It downloaded and installed everything
perfectly using this method.

I can confirm that Microsoft Office Live Add-In is incompatible with MSN
(error 235: not connected to internet - does not recognise broadband
connection). Uninstalling Office Live Add-In restores complete functionality
to MSN. Amazingly simple and simply baffling.

Thanks ...

After beating up MSN support I finally Got the answer on how to repair,
"OFFLINE"

Phase 1 - TO BACK UP E-MAIL MESSAGES UNDER FOLDERS ON YOUR COMPUTER

1. Click the Start button and open Control Panel.
2. Double-click on Folder Options.
3. On Folder Options window, go to the View tab.
4. Select Show hidden files and folders.
5. Uncheck Hide extensions for known file types and Hide protected operating
system files (Recommended).
6. Click on Apply, and then Ok. Close the window.
7. Click the Start button and select Computer.
8. Double-click on Local Disk C:
9. Double-click on Users folder.
10. Double-click on a folder that has your username or login name. If you do
not see a folder with your username, please look

for GalleryReview folder and open it.
11. Double-click on AppData folder.
12. Double-click on Local folder.
13. Double-click on Microsoft folder. You should see a folder named MSN.
14. Right-click on MSN folder and select Copy.
15. Go to your Desktop screen, right-click on an empty space and select
Paste.

Phase 2 - TO MOVE THE DATABASE FOLDER INFORMATION AND CREATE A NEW ONE,
follow these steps.

1. Sign out of the MSN software.
2. Click Start and click Control Panel.
3. Double-click on Folder Options. On the new window, click the View tab.
(Make sure that you are on Classic view.)
4. Select Show hidden files and folders.
5. Uncheck Hide extensions for known file types and Hide protected operating
system files. Click Yes on the confirmation

window.
6. Click Apply then OK.
7. Close the window.
8. Click Start then click Search.
9. Type %userprofile% then press Enter.
10. On the new window, double-click on the following folders in the same
order:

a. Appdata
b. Local
c. Microsoft
d. MSN
e. db30.

You should then see 2 files ending in .sdf with your email address on it.

11. Delete both files ending with .sdf.
12. Close the window.
13. Restart MSN and sign in to check.

Note: If you get an error when renaming the files, it means that you are
still signed in on the MSN program and you will need

to log out. If the problem reoccurs after doing so, then the e-mail messages
may be corrupted or damaged and is the one

causing the error.

Phase 3 - REFRESHING THE LOCAL DATA STORE

1. Start MSN, by double clicking on the MSN butterfly on the Desktop, but do
not sign in at the MSN Welcome Screen.
2. On the MSN Welcome Screen, press CTRL+SHIFT+F9.
3. When you receive the warning message, click Yes, Remove Information, and
then click Yes to complete the process.
4. Try to sign back in on the MSN program if the issue is resolved. If not,
proceed to Phase 4

Phase 4 - REFRESHING THE USER ACCOUNT INFORMATION

1. Double-click the MSN icon to launch the MSN Welcome window.

NOTE: If MSN has been set to automatically sign in, click the Cancel button.

2. Click on your email address.
3. Press and hold the Ctrl-Shift-F11 keys until a small pop-up window
appears that says “Removing MSN Account Information”.
4. Click on “Remove Account”.
5. Click on “Yes” to confirm. This will close the MSN window.
6. Double-click the MSN icon to launch MSN’s Installation Wizard.
7. Follow the on-screen instructions to set up your account.
8. Sign in to MSN like you normally do. Please wait for about 10 minutes
before checking your personal information such as

Address Book, Favorite and email messages to give MSN ample time to download
and synchronize this information.

Phase 5 - RESTORING THE E-MAIL MESSAGES UNDER FOLDERS ON YOUR COMPUTER

Follow these steps to restore MSN e-mail messages that came from Folders on
your computer

1. Sign out from the MSN software.
2. Right-click the MSN folder on your desktop screen and select Copy.
3. Click the Start button and open Control Panel.
4. Double-click on Folder Options.
5. On Folder Options window, go to the View tab.
6. Select Show hidden files and folders.
7. Uncheck Hide extensions for known file types and Hide protected operating
system files (Recommended).
8. Click on Apply, and then Ok. Close the window.
9. Click the Start button and select Computer.
10. Double-click on Local Disk C:
11. Double-click on Users folder.
12. Double-click on a folder that has your username or login name. If you do
not see a folder with your username, please look

for GalleryReview folder and open it.
13. Double-click on AppData folder.
14. Double-click on Local folder.
15. Double-click on Microsoft folder. You should see a folder named MSN.
16. Click Edit on top and Paste. If you are prompted to replace existing
files and folders, please click Yes.
17. Sign in to the MSN software.

Simple info to get like getting your teeth pulled!

actually has helped my fix my existing issue.
Thanks ...
