Hotmail live: Favorite contacts

In the old hotmail I could choose to select from a list of just my favorite
contacts when writing a new e-mail. Is this feature available in the new
hotmail?

This isn't an option in the new Hotmail web interface. Instead of clicking on
the address book icon to add contact addresses to the To: field, type a letter
or two of the name or email address of the recipient and it will bring up a list
of matches, narrowing it down as you type more letters. Click on one of the
offered matches to insert it into the field. Repeat for each additional contact.

I am an MSN user which means I pay money each month for this service. The
removal of favorite contacts makes it unuseable. I "had" 10 favorites aand
200 regular, many with multiple emails. It is very difficult to send messages
now.

Wasn't Hotmail's interface for selection of a 'Favorites' available to all
hotmail accounts not just MSn premium holders ?
I seem to recall that feature on all my free, premium and plus
hotmail/msn.com accounts in the old web interface, I could be mistaken.
If so, I realize that losing a feature can be annoying even if it was not an
MSn premium($/mo) provided feature.

I'm sorry I haven't been clear. Not everyone thinks alike. Some of us need
to see and choose from a list. "Not narrow the search". Which of my lawyers 4
emails was it he told me to normally use? I only write him every so often.
What was that friend that has a similiar boat, I can't remember their name
but it was 4 down on my favorite list.
Some of us can't remember it, we can't spell it, but we know it when we see
it. And Right away because we are visual. I am working on some kinda of work
around that will force my favorites to the top of the contact list which
shows maybe the first 20 or so. It is madding when people don't understand
that everyone doesn't think alike and threfore need different tools.
(Especially when we have had it for years and then it is removed)

Thank God I am not alone. What was MS thinking?

The elimination of the Favorites List ruins Hotmail for me. I have hundreds
of contacts but only a couple dozen I send email to regularly. I used the
Favorites list everyday. It was very important to me.

I use the Contacts list to store phone numbers and addresses as well as
email addresses. If I need an address or a phone number when traveling I log
on and go into Contacts to look it up.

I also use Contacts to back up my PDA. As a result I have many contacts that
don’t have email.

When I want to forward an email I don’t want to sort through hundreds of
contacts just to select 20 people to send a message to. I don’t want to type
20 names either.

Under the old Hotmail I could just quickly go through my Favorites list and
click on the names of the people I wanted to send the note to.

When inviting people to a birthday party or a lunch the Favorites list
helped remind me of whom to invite. I would see a name that I had not thought
of and click on it to include them in the invitation.

When forwarding a note on a particular subject the Favorites list helped
remind me of who might be interested in the subject of the note or the
pictures.

I have had this email address more than ten years. First as a free account
then as a paid Hotmail user. I hate the idea of changing the address but this
new Live Mail is unacceptable.

If MS doesn’t fix it I will look for another email service. I really hate
this new Live Mail. Why did they have to screw up a good thing?

As a temporary workaround, have you thought of renaming your favorite
contacts to force them to the top of the list? By adding a numeral to the
beginning of the name you can place them at the top (provided that WLH sorts
the same as the OS used) i.e. 0 John Doe, 1 Jane Doe, 3 My Lawyer, 4 Any
Contact, 5 Hotmail Support, 6 Gmail.com, 7 Yahoo Mail that works the way you
want them to, 8 Get the idea? Good luck with your problem.

the old hotmail was better. i mean i get that the world has to progess and
new shinny things need to be built. but i mean something as simple as no
favourites has spoiled hotmail for me. i now HATE fowarding emails. there
were other little things i didnt like but i forgot them now. but this
favourites thing is unacceptable. i loved the old hotmail interface. thats
why it was my main email acc. but now. i mean 2 days ago the colum that shows
who sent the email shrunk and i cant even see who sent me mail proerly from
the inbox page. plz fix the fav problem plz. i have to scroll tru 100 ppl
when i only want to send mail to 20. and as for the start tyin the peson
adress thing. come on.if u wanted to improve the old hotmail all u had to do.
and this was really my only slight problem. with ur favourite contacts make
it is cus away where next to all the fav contacts names there was a box than
u can tick and at a select all botton that would have made it perfect.

I totally agree with the complaints on this thread. Scrolling through 100s
of contacts is unworkable, and the "list narrowing" is also unusable because
my contacts are not uniformly named - some are just
***@hotmail.com and some are by first and last name. I don't have
time to clean up 100s of contacts because Hotmail decided to jettison its
most useful and user friendly feature. What a mistake.

If I type some letters in the To: field it does not bring up a list of
matching contacts. If I type a name then click on the To: it does not bring
up a list of matching contacts but brings up the complete contact list.

However, even if this worked it would NOT be a substitute for the old
Favorites List in Hotmail. Not even close!

Someone posted a workaround which might help but it really angers me that I
have to go to the trouble of trying to fix this MS idiocy. Especially since I
am PAYING for this service!

I will give MS a couple of months. If they don't restore the Favorites
feature I will find another email service.

Change should be constructive not destructive.

Have any of you complaining about not having favourites tried to set up
contact groups? I have several - "Family", Work", "Tennis Club" and so on.
So if I want to sent a message to the tennis team, I just start typing
Tenn... and the group I'm looking for appears by magic in the To: field. How
was Favourites different?

From Help:
Create a contact group
You can organize your contacts into contact groups so that you can send mail
to everyone in a group at the same time. You can create multiple groups, and
contacts can belong to more than one group.

*Create a contact group
In the left pane, click Contacts.
Next to New, click the arrow , and then click Group.
Type a name for your new group, and then press ENTER. Your new contact group
appears under All contacts.

*Add a contact to a contact group
In the left pane, click Contacts.
Select one or more contacts from your contact list.
On the Add to group menu, select a group to add the contacts to.

-or-

Click and drag the contacts to the appropriate group.

*Remove a contact from a contact group
In the left pane, click Contacts.
Select a group from the list in the left pane.
Click the contact that you want to remove.

-or-

Hold down the CTRL key, and then click each contact that you want to remove.

Yes the Favorites list was different. It wasn't just a group list. I have
several group lists.

You could put anyone who you frequently emailed into the Favorites list be
they family, friends, work associates, or business contacts.

When you went to send a message the Favorites list would appear on the right
side of the screen. You could in effect quickly create a "group" list
dynamically on the fly. A regular group list doesn't give you anywhere near
that kind of flexibility and ease.

For example. If you wanted to put together a lunch and only invite certain
friends all you had to do was click on their names to the right to put them
in the address field.

Now I have to sort through the entire list of hundreds of contacts to select
them. What a pain!

The groups is a good workaround, but the typing a few letters to bring up your
choices onl works in the full version, not with the classic interface.

I can create a group to duplicate the old Favorites list and make a bad
situation a little less bad. But it is not a good workaround.

That awkward aworkaround only works when sending an original message. I have
not been able to find a way to forward an email, open a group list, and
select only certain members of that group to send the email to.

Even when sending an original message this workaround isn't as fast and easy
as the old Favorites list which automatically appeared on the right side of
the screen whenever you sent an email.

MS already gives us a contact list on that side of the screen in the new
Hotmail anyway. Why can't they just let us choose what goes into the
Preferred Email list?

Then I could put my favorites in that list or I could create a group and
have it displayed there instead of all my contacts.

That would solve the problem. It seems like such a simple thing.

Switch to the "full" version and you will get the matching contacts when typing
in a few letters. Of course, if you are on a slow connection, your experience
with the full version will not be optimal. I use it on dial-up, but it is slow.
I understand your frustration with the loss of the Favorite contacts feature. I
recommend giving feedback to the team - http://feedback.live.com - select
Windows Live Hotmail from the list.

You can organize your contacts into contact groups so that you can send mail
to everyone in a group at the same time. You can create multiple groups, and
contacts can belong to more than one group

*Create a contact grou
In the left pane, click Contacts
Next to New, click the arrow , and then click Group
Type a name for your new group, and then press ENTER. Your new contact group
appears under All contacts

*Add a contact to a contact grou
In the left pane, click Contacts
Select one or more contacts from your contact list
On the Add to group menu, select a group to add the contacts to

Click and drag the contacts to the appropriate group

*Remove a contact from a contact grou
In the left pane, click Contacts
Select a group from the list in the left pane
Click the contact that you want to remove

Hold down the CTRL key, and then click each contact that you want to remove

Click the first contact in a sequence of contacts, hold down the SHIFT key,
and then click the last contact in the sequence of contacts

Click Remove from group

Note
To send e-mail to a whole group, type the group name in the To box when
composing an e-mail message, or select the group in the contact list, and
then click E-mail group
Removing a contact from a group does not delete the contact

You could put anyone who you frequently emailed into the Favorites list be
they family, friends, work associates, or business contacts.

When you went to send a message the Favorites list would appear on the right
side of the screen. You could in effect quickly create a "group" list
dynamically on the fly. A regular group list doesn't give you anywhere near
that kind of flexibility and ease.

For example. If you wanted to put together a lunch and only invite certain
friends all you had to do was click on their names to the right to put them
in the address field.

Now I have to sort through the entire list of hundreds of contacts to select
them. What a pain!

That awkward aworkaround only works when sending an original message. I have
not been able to find a way to forward an email, open a group list, and
select only certain members of that group to send the email to.

Even when sending an original message this workaround isn't as fast and easy
as the old Favorites list which automatically appeared on the right side of
the screen whenever you sent an email.

MS already gives us a contact list on that side of the screen in the new
Hotmail anyway. Why can't they just let us choose what goes into the
Preferred Email list?

Then I could put my favorites in that list or I could create a group and
have it displayed there instead of all my contacts.

That would solve the problem. It seems like such a simple thing.

Are you referring to 'favorite'
- contacts, a group/category of persons in an instant messenger client, or links/bookmarks to access a web site, ???

For Contacts and Messenger
- 'Favorites' is a category one can assign a single or group contacts in the web UI at contacts.live.com.

For links/bookmarks to access a web site
- Are you referring to IE favorites that were available as Favorites in the old Hotmail web UI and later referred to as Windows
Live Favorites ?

If so, Windows Live Favorites was discontinued in April of 2009 and replaced with Sky Drive Favorites.

Existing Favorites on Windows Live Favorites(present from either IE)were auto-migrated to Sky Drive.
- If Favorites were never migrated to Windows Live Favorites prior to it being discontinued, thus not present then nothing would

Live ID at http://skydrive.live.com and click on the folder named Favorites

Info if one wishes to have IE's favorites available online(for a given hotmail type account-e.g. msn.com, hotmail.com,
or live.com) or third party registered Live ID, then note:
a. the current Skydive Favorites does not import IE Favorites
b. the current Windows Live Toolbar does sync IE Favorites to the Skydive Favorites

If you are referring to MSN Favorites...available in MSN Explorer provided with an MSN Premium subscription plan..that would be a
different ballgame/method to move those from MSN Explorer to IE to the Skydive.

Oh my, I have to agree with all of you. I don't "want" to work around this
new and "improved" feature. I want my old favorite list back!! I have had
hotmail for years. And I am absolutely not happy with all the new changes
that they force down my throat lately. If it ain't broke, don't fix it!! Yes,
new features are nice, but if the old ones are fine and people are happy, why
mess with it?
