Discussion:
Installing New Live version on many computers

I posted this message on microsoft.public.msn.messenger and then realised
this would be a better place since more activity.

Our users have MSN Live messenger version 8.1.
They don't have admin rights to install.
I would like to update to the latest version.
I looked for a full installation file and didn't find one. The installation
file is a small 2mb file that does a local download.
It will be very time consuming to install this way on over 100
workstations...
Does anyone know where I can download a full installation file?

The full executable(exe or msi) is not available from Microsoft.

If a machine already exists with Windows Live Messenger the Messenger and Sign-in Assistant Msi installation file can be found on
that machine in a hidden folder.

See the Dec. 08 entry on this site for the location and nomenclature(filename)
The Field Guide : Windows Live Applications MSI Installation Files
http://liveunplugged.spaces.live.com/?_c11_BlogPart_BlogPart=blogview&_c=BlogPart&partqs=cat%3dWindows%2bLive

If installing the Sign-in Assistant, run Microsoft Update to obtain the latest available update 5.0.742.2

Still around, it was the transition product from MSn Messenger to Live. The last branded 'MSn' was 7.0.

A link for 8.1 and 7.0 can be found on the download site for latest Live Messenger 2008(version 8.5.x)

Thanks for that.

When I searched the Download Center page the other day for "Windows Live
Messenger," that was NOT among the results. ("Powered by Windows Live
Search" my sweet ___!)

Lurkers please note: That download is for Windows Live "All in One"
installer, not just Windows Live Messenger, so beware! Opt for a Custom
install so that you don't install anything you don't want to install (e.g.,
Windows Live Toolbar; Windows Live Writer).

Yes..it is the WLInstaller.exe, iirc, the process it follows upon execution.
1. Accept agreement
2. Prompt with two options(Make Live Search Default and Collect Install Data for Msft)
3. Prompt for the Live Apps not currently installed, note Messenger is pre-selected)
4. Download the selected application installer(s)for each app selected
5. Install the app.
6. Prompt when Done

Note: Toolbar and Family Safety are always unchecked.

You got me wrong.
The link you giver here is for 8.1.0...
There is already a version 8.5 and all my users are pressuring to get it.
This new version is only local download.
Jonathan Kay on his website gives a link for the full download but it is an
unattended setup where you can't select any options/component

Larry i tried your tip!!! THANKS :)
This is what i have done and seems to have work....but will see by our

resonse. Now we need script to remove from all 300 pc's.
We found that the updates kb947449 (2008) new version 967912 (2009)
C:\WINDOWS\SoftwareDistribution we deleted file "DataStore.edb" then was
not prompted any more. I will see if we get anymore complaints
My first question, of course, would be: Do you have the Windows Live
Sign-In Assistant installed on your machines?
My second question would be: What *version* of the Windows Live Sign-In
Assistant is installed?
I have several users with the same problem on my network; me
included. I don't remember installing Windows Live Sign-In Assistant,
but it is on my workstation. Version 5.000.818.6. We're running
Windows XP SP2.

That should only be deployed through MU if using an older version of WLMail, Msgr, PhotoGallery etc..

You might wish to upgrade to the latest version(s) of the WL Essentials, then remove the Sign-in assistant if that is your intent.

Thanks for the prompt reply.
I have downloaded this file and tried to install it on my computer.
Tell me if I am wrong: It does an unattended install where I cannot select
any options...
Is there a way to select the installation options/components of the setup?
I don't want any of the additional componants like Live Installer, Live
Toolbar, Live Sign-in etc... to be installed on the workstations.

Thanks

Our users have MSN Live messenger version 8.1.
They don't have admin rights to install.
I would like to update to the latest version.
I looked for a full installation file and didn't find one. The
installation file is a small 2mb file that does a local download.
It will be very time consuming to install this way on over 100
workstations...
Does anyone know where I can download a full installation file?

There are no options. The other "options" you're thinking of are separate MSIs.

Thanks for the prompt reply.
I have downloaded this file and tried to install it on my computer.
Tell me if I am wrong: It does an unattended install where I cannot select any options...
Is there a way to select the installation options/components of the setup?
I don't want any of the additional componants like Live Installer, Live Toolbar, Live
Sign-in etc... to be installed on the workstations.
Thanks
Greetings,

Our users have MSN Live messenger version 8.1.
They don't have admin rights to install.
I would like to update to the latest version.
