Discussion:
MSN and 64 bit Vista
(too old to reply)

hello Howard

As I know MSN premium software, which includes MSN explorer software is not
compatible with Windows Vista 64 bit, we need to wait for the MSN to release
an 64-bit compatible Explorer
I have a 64 bit implementation of Vista Ultimate. I have been using the
Windows Live apps, mail and messenger, for a few weeks. The XP Pro machine
that I have been running MSN Explorer on finally gave up the ghost and I
switched it out with the new 64 bit machine.
This morning I downloaded and installed MSN without event. The "event"
occurred when I restarted the machine.
Immediately upon Vista starting up I get an error message saying that
windows has encountered a serious error -- it doesn't say what -- and that
it will shut down in one minute. Almost simultaneously I get another
message saying that there is a newer version of MSN Messenger available and
asking me if I wanted to upgrade. It didn't matter of course because by the
time I read the message and pondered on why I would get it -- remember, I
have the latest Windows Live Messenger -- the machine would automatically
re-boot.
I finally had to force it to boot in safe mode and remove MSN. That took
care of the error and I'm back stable again.
My question is "Should I be able to run MSN Explorer -- I like it,
especially the photo sharing -- on a 64 bit Vista Ultimate platform?
If the answer is yes, does anyone have any similar experience and know how
to resolve this issue?
Thanks in advance,
Howard

MSN Explorer, available for subscribers from membercenter.msn.com or from
partner sites if MSN is offered via a DSL subscription, for example, is fully
compatible with Vista 64 bit already.

Are you sure? A post by Ravi Tejpal dated 10/17/2008 says it is not. Also
Qwest users are still getting MSN Explorer version 9.50.0039.1900. Postings
in this discussion group give the impression that 9.6 is the current
version. I went to membercenter.msn.com and downloaded and installed "the
latest MSN software" just now, which turned out to be 9.50.0039.1900.

Sandi, your MSN emails can be accessed using Outlook, Outlook Connector,
Outlook Express, Windows Live Mail and the Hotmail/Live web portal.

Btw information on Microsoft Downloads says that Outlook Connector is
compatible with Outlook 2003 and 2007, but I am apparently using it
successfully on this computer with Outlook 2002.

Could be Qwest issue and possibly further compounded with Qwest suggesting use of WLM.

Access in OE and Outlook(without the OLC) uses Web DAV which eventually will be retired, but no sooner than Jan 2009.

I can't speak from personal experience yet, but I'm referring to Berit's post of
10/23 in the newsgroup. Her comment about using it for over a year would seem to
indicate that 9.5 also works on x64 Vista.

Hi Lynn,

I work on the MSN Explorer product team, and I can assure you that MSN
Explorer does work on Vista 64. In fact, I have an HP Vista 64 laptop that
has been running it for over a year.

The latest version (9.6) was specifically tested for Vista 64 (both Vista
Gold and Service Pack 1) compatibility. Our previous version (9.5) also runs
on Vista 64.

Since Sympatico offers different security products than MSN Retail, I cannot
speak to their Vista 64 compatibility.

Thank you for taking the time to post your inquiry. We are in the process
of updating the Sympatico Support team with this information.

Take care,

Hi Ravi, I went back to Berit's original post and Stephen left out the
following.

"This posting is provided "AS IS" with no warranties, and confers no

Berit's post is pretty definite about it working. Are you using MSN's
Member Center setup program or a partner's version?

Heh, being a member of the MSN team can be interpreted in a number of ways.
How many developers did Berit have in her office, from MSN and Vista both,
when she was installing for the first time? It's not just Ravi either.
It's Ravi and this other fellow Howard in the same thread, plus somebody in
another thread who cannot run MSN Explorer under SP1.

MSN software is beginning to show its age, and let's face it is not on the
bleeding edge of Microsoft's marketing and development efforts. You should
expect more than the normal number of problems as it falls further and
further behind. I had a lot of trouble getting it to work on my Vista
laptop, and finally gave up on the exercise. If you want the "latest and
greatest" then maybe the Windows Live applications are better suited. Or
released software like IE7 and Outlook.

Immediately upon Vista starting up I get an error message saying that
windows has encountered a serious error -- it doesn't say what --
and
that
it will shut down in one minute. Almost simultaneously I get another
message saying that there is a newer version of MSN Messenger
available

asking me if I wanted to upgrade. It didn't matter of course
because by

I finally had to force it to boot in safe mode and remove MSN.
That
took
care of the error and I'm back stable again.
My question is "Should I be able to run MSN Explorer -- I like it,
especially the photo sharing -- on a 64 bit Vista Ultimate platform?

True enough, Earle. I agree on the age of MSN Explorer and can certainly
understand install issues on *any* platform.
It still doesn't mean that MSN Explorer is not compatible with 64 Bit Vista.

I too have been using msn prem on my vista home prem 64 bit for several
years. I had to reinstall msn premium, due to hard disk crash.. Now I have
the same problem with the reboot thing you discussed. I also, can not get the
Live mail to work. It reports the mail store is missing, and some nonsence
about being out of memory. I now must read my mail on the msn web site.

Hi Lynn,
I work on the MSN Explorer product team, and I can assure you that MSN
Explorer does work on Vista 64. In fact, I have an HP Vista 64 laptop that
has been running it for over a year.
The latest version (9.6) was specifically tested for Vista 64 (both Vista
Gold and Service Pack 1) compatibility. Our previous version (9.5) also runs
on Vista 64.
Since Sympatico offers different security products than MSN Retail, I cannot
speak to their Vista 64 compatibility.
Thank you for taking the time to post your inquiry. We are in the process
of updating the Sympatico Support team with this information.
Take care,

I finally got fed up with this and called Qwest support. They asked me all
the usual questions (Are you connected to the Internet, Are you breathing,
etc) and finally patched me through to the MSN Partner Support. This guy had
me delete this folder in the registry -

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE>SOFTWARE>Wow6432Node>Microsoft>Windows>Current
Version>Internet Settings>5.0>User Agent>Post Platform

I tried it again and it's working now on Vista 64bit. As a note, I was
trying to install the msnsusii.exe on Vista 64bit and getting error 235 on
installation...something about not being connected to the internet.

New version as far as I have it is 9.60.0053.200, but if you have a
different plan then it could be greater or less. In other words just
because I have this version doesn't mean you would get it. I am a Qwest DSL
customer and Qwest gets to control when I get access to versions and to add
"enhancements" to the MSN Premium software. The people running your
program, even if it is MSFT themselves, do the same for you.

I had the non-stop reboot thing too, gave up on MSN for a month or two,
installed Vista Ultimate, and then after reading your post today tried it
again. MSN Explorer installed and ran great just like the perfect Internet
suite that it is. Could have been Ultimate install, any of several Windows
updates or even a minor update in MSN Explorer, that made it work.

If you are paying $9.95 a month just for MSN Premium, then (snicker,
snicker) Imho you are being ripped off, or ripping off yourself. I use it
because it is included "free" with my Qwest DSL subscription. IE7 has all
the features you need, except for MSN accounts management. (Why would you
need that without MSN?) You could pay $19.95 a year, get Hotmail Plus, and
use pop3 to access your mail. If you needed other msn/live/hotmail
addresses you could use linked Live IDs instead of MSN secondary accounts.

I used MSN Mail for several years, then switched to Outlook Express with
pop3 beginning of 2007 and now I use Outlook with Outlook Connector, all
with the same "@msn.com" address.

"Berit Benson Community Leader - MSN Internet Access" says that MSN Explorer
has worked on Vista 64 for her "for over a year", but as a former MSFT
employee I know how that all works. Got to be running Ultimate, and a whole
team of developers and test engineers was involved in shoe-horning the
program onto her computer. In my case it took luck and/or persistence, and
I am sure the program is busily corrupting its own or some other program's
data files even as I write this... ;^)

Cheers,

Earle

I had the exact samething happen and i had to do a system restore on
my
brand
new laptop i had for one day!!! i called msn and they are not
compatible
with
Vista Ultimate 64 bit so i wait........i hate internet explorer and
my
emails
are all on msn so its really inconvenient. hope msn comes out with a
compatible version soon!!!
I have a 64 bit implementation of Vista Ultimate. I have been using the
Windows Live apps, mail and messenger, for a few weeks. The XP
Pro
machine
that I have been running MSN Explorer on finally gave up the ghost and I
switched it out with the new 64 bit machine.
This morning I downloaded and installed MSN without event. The "event"
occurred when I restarted the machine.
Immediately upon Vista starting up I get an error message saying that
windows has encountered a serious error -- it doesn't say what --
and
that
it will shut down in one minute. Almost simultaneously I get another
message saying that there is a newer version of MSN Messenger
available
and
asking me if I wanted to upgrade. It didn't matter of course
because by
the
time I read the message and pondered on why I would get it --
remember,
I
have the latest Windows Live Messenger -- the machine would automatically
re-boot.
I finally had to force it to boot in safe mode and remove MSN.
That
took
care of the error and I'm back stable again.
My question is "Should I be able to run MSN Explorer -- I like it,
especially the photo sharing -- on a 64 bit Vista Ultimate platform?
If the answer is yes, does anyone have any similar experience and
know
how
to resolve this issue?
Thanks in advance,
Howard

I've been using the online site to view my mail for months now and I am
becoming "Disturbed". How microsoft can do this stuff to me is beyond my
understanding. Are they trying to get me to look for another company to
provide my Disk Operating needs? If Windows Live is not compatible with MSN
or Vista or any other microsoft product has compatibility with ANY other
microsoft product why do they release it? If 64 bit versions need LUCK to
even work then don't sell them to us until they have been honed to at least
work with other microsoft products. More and more there are company's out
there that have no problem at all with charging people for services that need
LUCK to even work at all. "Distrubing?"

I used MSN Mail for several years, then switched to Outlook Express with
pop3 beginning of 2007 and now I use Outlook with Outlook Connector, all
"Berit Benson Community Leader - MSN Internet Access" says that MSN Explorer
has worked on Vista 64 for her "for over a year", but as a former MSFT
employee I know how that all works. Got to be running Ultimate, and a whole
team of developers and test engineers was involved in shoe-horning the
program onto her computer. In my case it took luck and/or persistence, and
I am sure the program is busily corrupting its own or some other program's
data files even as I write this... ;^)

Hi Lynn,
I work on the MSN Explorer product team, and I can assure you that MSN
Explorer does work on Vista 64. In fact, I have an HP Vista 64 laptop that
has been running it for over a year.
The latest version (9.6) was specifically tested for Vista 64 (both Vista
Gold and Service Pack 1) compatibility. Our previous version (9.5) also runs
on Vista 64.
Since Sympatico offers different security products than MSN Retail, I cannot
speak to their Vista 64 compatibility.
Thank you for taking the time to post your inquiry. We are in the process
of updating the Sympatico Support team with this information.

If you have a paid MSN Premium account then you have the right to phone
support for your problem.

Outlook versions 2003 and 2007 work just dandy under Vista to access your
MSN mail account.

Windows Live Mail (http://download.mail.com) does too but I hesitate to
recommend it because it is really beta quality.

Pop3/smtp has been enabled for accounts in the UK, US, Brazil and other
places. This means that practically any email client will work, including
the Windows Mail program that comes with your copy of Vista. Pop3/smtp has
been enabled for Hotmail free accounts. It should work just dandy with
Vista.

I had the exact samething happen and i had to do a system restore on my brand
new laptop i had for one day!!! i called msn and they are not compatible with
Vista Ultimate 64 bit so i wait........i hate internet explorer and my emails
are all on msn so its really inconvenient. hope msn comes out with a
compatible version soon!!!
I have a 64 bit implementation of Vista Ultimate. I have been using the
Windows Live apps, mail and messenger, for a few weeks.
It didn't matter of course because by
the
time I read the message and pondered on why I would get it -- remember, I
have the latest Windows Live Messenger -- the machine would automatically
Thanks in advance,
Howard

OP says, "...I downloaded and installed MSN Premium software..." It looks
like the web site.

I had several failures trying to get this software working on 32-bit Vista,
but now it is working great. I would avoid saying that this fellow is doing
something wrong. There is obviously a problem with MSN Explorer or MSN
Installer here.

Well let me add to the woes of many "real" (not MS employees) posting here.
I went out and bought a new HP Pavilion computer running a 64-bit version of
Vista Home Premium and tried to get it up and running today.........all day
from 6AM to 6PM. Everything was fine until I downloaded and installed MSN
Premium software. It goes into a continual reboot mode just as others have
described. The only way to stabilize it is to disconnect the network cable
and then uninstall MSN Premium. I had resisted migrating to Vista for a long
time and this is an example of why I hate this stuff. A terrible "out of the
box" experience. A wasted, frustrating day with an hour or more on the phone
to India support team, system restore, etc. etc. all to no avail, until I
discovered for myself what the culprit was ! Stupid ! No wonder there are
those willing to overpay for a Mac to avoid this nonsense !

Take care,

Thanks, Earle. I missed that in my sleep deprived state.
As you know, some have reported no problems at all with installing MSN Explorer

mentioned. I don't have it installed on Vista x64, but it is working fine on an

I had a simular problem, found the solution, and posted it somewhere in this
discussion group, and can't find it now. But: Turn off you firewall, that had
me confused that my MSN Connection Center was trying to "dial up" since the
"LAN" check box was missing from my settings window; I kept getting error
number 2, 215 and 8010; all directing me to have lost my connection to the
internet. After installing my MSN, I added all of the MCC and MSN ".exe"
files to the "Allow" column of my firewall, and have had no problems since.
Stay with your MSN or Windows Live Messenger, and don't try to use the new
Live beta yet. The beta will throw you for a loop also.

membercenter.msn.com/download.aspx
Chances are pretty good that that link is only valid for Verizon DSL
customers logged in to their MSN account. I can load the same link, but I
get the Qwest DSL branded version of MSN. Maybe they're the same download,
maybe not. I can't run the Qwest DSL version under 32-bit Vista either. It
installs and everything looks good for about a minute after I log on. Then
whether I start MSN Explorer or not Windows encounters a serious error and
has to restart. Removal of MSN Explorer is the only way to stop it from
happening.

We have had reports here from some users that it works, and from others that
it doesn't. If you are Verizon Customer Support then you have to raise the
issue with MSN Customer Support. Qwest is promoting Windows Live as the
replacement for MSN, but if the customer doesn't have XP or Vista or
adequate hardware then that is not going to work for him.

Cheers,

Earle

See my other post in this group. Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't.
To answer your question, no, Microsoft would not at least make a product
that is compatible with its own email.

One recourse that you have is to call Verizon Customer Support. Navigate to
http://support.msn.com and sign in with your Verizon MSN user name and
password. If they are like Qwest they won't know anything about this issue,
they will tell you that MSN is incompatible with 64-bit Vista, they will
blame you for it not working, etc.

Have you tried Outlook or Windows Live Mail? Both are capable of accessing
MSN Hotmail.

Cheers,

I have had trouble also in early 2009.
Still waiting for a PATCH or solution.
Toshiba laptop running 64 bit Vista.
Install of MSN premium software causes computer to go into an endless reboot
cycle. Both MS and Verison had me reformat HD several times.
i currently access my email through Hotmail -but am not happy with this
option.
Do not like the way the email program works.
Cannot drag/drop photos or flies-
Cannot make additional storage folders, even composing an email is different.
Cant highlight and drag words to rearrange an email.
Very frustrated-no help from MS or Verizon as they all seem cluselss about
this issue.
Has there been any updates in the past year on this problem?
Is it possible for me to change my OS from Vista 64 bit to windows 7 and
have it work properly-
and if so-what disadvantages will there be regarding my computer running on
a different bit system?
(not sure if i am expressing my concern correctly)
thanks for any help.

cannot use our msn email? I HATE going through IE. I hate how the email
looks...blah blah blah....Wouldnt you think that microsoft would atleast make
a product that is compatable with its own email....grrrr Is there no way
around this??? Any future site if a patch or upgrade that will work with msn?
Thanks in advance,
Howard
