I created a photo album on MSN. When I click "add Photo", it prompted me to
install the MSN Photo Upload Control. I continued by clicking the "Install"
button. It started "Down loading ..." A moment later, I received a message
indicating "The control failed to install".

Can someone please tell me what is the problem and how it can be fixed s.t.
I can install the control to upload multiple pictures rather than one at a
time ?

Hi
I came across this problem only one time after many installs. This is what I
did to install it. As I recall I did it several times before I did step 12
It truly was a pain to get going.

Microsoft Photo upload tool is an active X control. So your problem maybe
that you have a popup or firewall issue that may not allow you to download
this or you have a corrupt file. Try the following.

1) Make sure your AV program is updated and run scan. Then update your
spyware programs and run these. See http://tinyurl.com/7uaob if you do not
have these.

2) Close all programs and browsers. Do not open any unnecessary windows
while doing the following.

3) Click Start>Control Panel> Network and Internet Connections>
Internet Options

4) You should see the General tab box. On temporary Internet files,
Delete all cookies, Delete files. Then go to settings> view file and
highlight any that that have not been deleted in the Temporary Internet
Files. Close out that window.

5) Now you should still see the General>Setting Box. Then click on the
View Objects this should open C:\WINDOWS\Downloaded Program. Delete the MSN
Photo upload tool and the MSN Photo Select Tool file. You may not have both
or any of them. Now close out that window.

6) Now you should still see the General>Setting Box. Check the
"Automatically" on the "Check for newer versions of stored pages:" Click on
OK

7) Now you are still at Internet options General tab box, click on
Security tab at the top. Highlight trusted sites, and then click on sites
button. Uncheck box Require server verification (https:) then add the
following http://*.msn.com, http://*.microsoft.com If keeping these
settings bother you then later you can remove them after you get the MSN
upload tool loaded. Hit close button.

8) Now highlight the Internet globe and hit the custom button, In the
Internet settings box under ActiveX controls and plug-ins: check for the
following "Automatic prompting for ActiveX controls", check disable or
prompt.
"Download signed ActiveX controls", check to prompt.
"Download unsigned ActiveX controls", check to disable or prompt.
"Initialize and script ActiveX controls not marked as safe:" check disable
or prompt.
"Run ActiveX controls and plug-ins", check enable.
"Script ActiveX controls marked safe for scripting", check Enable.

9) Now hit the OK button. Be sure it not cancel or the reset button. If
you think you may have made this mistake go back and reset them. Hit OK

10) Reboot your computer.

11) Turn off all your popup blockers and try again. If you still are having
problem then repeat steps 2-5 and reboot. Then turn off popup blockers and
firewall before trying to download MSN Photo Upload Tool.

12) After all this work and still not working then look for this. All
software will get corrupt that includes Firewalls so you may have to
uninstall and reinstall your firewall.

Hi James, followed your instructions and now have photo upload tool. Thank
you. However I had hoped that it might enable me to view a web site called
papers past (a New Zealand Government site) but no XP wont have it. When I
was running ME I had no problems. Any help appreciated. Should I return all
the bits I changed as per your instructions back to how they were?
Thanks again its great to be able to upload the old photos once more.

For Vista, close all instances of IE, then click on Start > All

Can't see them where? Where are your pictures? You need to browse to whatever
folder on your PC that you have stored your pictures in. The default is
\Pictures under your User folder in Vista, but if you have them stored
elsewhere, you will need to navigate to them.

11) Turn off all your popup blockers and try again. If you still are having
problem then repeat steps 2-5 and reboot. Then turn off popup blockers and
firewall before trying to download MSN Photo Upload Tool.

Chrissy, one other thing to try is this:
If you are browsing using a Limited User account under Windows XP, you won't
be able to install the control. You need to change the account to administrator,
and then go get the control installed. Then log off the
PC, downgrade the account back to limited and it will continue to be able to use
the photo control.

Hi there,

Okay, it was working, now it does not seem to be. I'm on Vista, with IE7.
Photo upload had been working well prior. Now, I go through the motions,
attach photos, see all my photos, upload, wait for uploads, but then when it
goes back to the message, the photos are not actually uploaded/attached to
the message?

Any suggestions?

The two main reasons we are aware of are:
1. Running the preview build of IE7 - beta 2. Update to the latest Beta code and
the problem should go away.
2. If you are browsing using a Limited User account under Windows XP, you won't
be able to install the control. You need to change the account to administrator,
visit Spaces to upload photos and get the control installed. Then log off the
PC, downgrade the account back to limited and it will continue to be able to use
the photo control.

Hi, look, my problem is this:

when I load the Windows Live Photo Upload Control page
(http://spaces.live.com/photoactivexdl.aspx) under IE7 (final version under
winxp sp2) there's a blue button that says "Insatll now" when I clik it,
there's a yellow label that appears under my addresses bar, and ask me if i
let the activeX to run or not... I allow it... then a diaglog pops up and
prompts me to install or not the activeX Windows Live Photo Upload Control, I
say "Insatall" but DAMN!!! nothing, absolutely NOTHING happens... I need to
now how the hell do I install that activeX so I can upload my pics... thank
you very much

Ok guys, for all the people that kept trying this insane instructions, like
turning off everything (Pop up Blocker and Norton Security), or the changes
in the Security Tab settings on the Tools menu on the Explorer, I did them
all and it doesn't work...
Here is what it worked for me:

I turned PopUp Blocker off, then I restart the computer, and before the
computer starts to boot, press F8 to enter the System Recovery Menu.
Choose Safe mode with Networking... then Windows XP (not Recovery Console)
to boot with the GUI.
When we get to the Windows Desktop, start Internet Explorer, verify PopUp
blocker is off and create an Album on MSN Photo.
It will pop up a window with the "famous" Install MSN Photo. When you click
on it it will show a yellow banner line on the top of the page asking if you
still want to install the ActiveX Control... Do a right click and choose to
install it...
Now you will see your pictures folders of your computer...
You can restart the computer normally, and the control will be installed
again...
Don't forget to Turn on the PopUp blocker again...
Hope everybody find this useful...

ITS EVEN EASIER THAN ALL THAT!!!!
just click download when it says download failed look up and you will see a
yellow banner, turn off your pop-up blocker first click the yellow banner,
then it will bring you back to the download page, click download and it will
work! It was so easy!!!!!
simple!

Hi Lucy,

By any chance are you running Norton Internet Security? You may need to
disable your "Ad Blocker" or "Pop-Up Blocker" settings. Also, within
Internet Explorer you may need to set spaces.msn.com to "Allow Pop-ups".

Here's more information posted by the MSN Spaces Team addressing the issue:

On a limited account, the photo control will not install. The dialog for the
control appears and you have the button for Install Now. Clicking it does
nothing and no warning message appears. Nothing.
Changing the account to an Administrator allows the control to be downloaded and
installed. Changing the account back to limited allows the photo control to work
as it is already installed.

So, the solution is to have the administrator for your machine change your
account type to adminsitrator. Log into your account, visit your MSN Space and
go to photos. Install the control. Log off of your account, have the account
type changed back to Limited. Log back into your account and the photo control
will work for you.

All these instructions may be fine if you have Windows XP, but not for
Windows 98. The MSN Photo Upload tool was working fine on my laptop, which
has Windows XP, but that computer is not working at all now and needs to be
repaired, so I'm using my old desktop with Windows 98. I have no use for
Windows Live Spaces, especially on this computer. Windows Live does not work
properly on this computer.

I am in the process of revising one of my groups, and setting up a new one,
and it has required saving and reposting literally thousands of pictures, and
now only being able to add them one at a time is extremely time consuming. I
don't know when we will be able to get the laptop fixed, so please let me
know if there is any way I can get the photo upload control to install on a
Windows 98 OS. There is no admistrator account, no popup blocker settings,
and no firewall. The only popup blocker is Google, and that's set to allow
popups on MSN Groups. I ran 2 virus scans, Ad Aware and Spybot, and disk
cleanup, and disk defragmenter, and rebooted several times.

It took me a few days to try to answer/test this(and my test may not be
indicative of your system nor do I know if was a valid test).
In any event I couldn't get it to function, but here's what I tried.

I installed an old 98se drive that was in use on a laptop before
replacing the drive with a new one and XPsp2.
I temporarily reset IE6 security for active X to a minimum. Added
live.com, msn.com, and hotmail.com to the trusted sites.
Logged on with my passport/live id.
I went here to download the active X
http://spaces.live.com/mmm2005-09-20_19.45/PhotoActiveXDL.aspx?spud=1
It appears to install but any use of the photo app fails on all
accounts.
This may indicate it won't run in Win98se.
Ymmv.
Sorry can't offer anymore information. It's been quite a few years since
I used Win98se.

when i click on add photo nothing happens and it does not tell me to install
msn photo upload do you know anywhere i can download it from?

I suspect the photo upload ceased to function on anything other than XP (and
from what I have been reading over the past few weeks it doesn't work well on
that either) because I have Windows 2000 and it doesn't work either
regardless of what I have tried....I am exceedingly frustrated too :(
Post by ...winston

If you are using the older IE7 Preview version, you can't install the control.
You also can't install the control if your Windows User account is a limited
account and not an administrator.

why ? Unable to install MSN Photo Upload Control
7 days ago, I reposted this:

The two main reasons we are aware of are:
1. Running the preview build of IE7 - beta 2. Update to the latest Beta code and
the problem should go away.
2. If you are browsing using a Limited User account under Windows XP, you won't
be able to install the control. You need to change the account to administrator,
visit Spaces to upload photos and get the control installed. Then log off the
PC, downgrade the account back to limited and it will continue to be able to use
the photo control.
You can also use the support form to request help from Windows Live Spaces

Ledion I am running Vista and have 4mb DSL when clicking on the link
http://spaces.live.com/photoactivexdl.aspx It said it would take about 3-4
min with 56-kbs yet it took about that long with my speed. It then was
blocked with the ActiveX bar across the top of IE7. Another few min I got
prompt again. So if you are on Dialup who know how long. here is help from
the Live.space.com link in case you have not seen it.
Install the Photo Upload control (Windows Vista only)
After you install the Photo Upload control, you can upload multiple photos
at the same time, edit captions during the upload process, experience
enhanced previews, and rotate or crop photos.

On your Windows Vista desktop, click Start, and then point to All Programs.
Right-click Internet Explorer, and then click Run as administrator. If
prompted, provide your Administrator ID and password.
In the address bar of the new Internet Explorer window, paste the following
web address: http://spaces.live.com/photoactivexdl.aspx.
Press ENTER.
Follow the instructions.
In the same Internet Explorer window, return to your space.
In the same Internet Explorer window, add a photo to your space. For more
information, see Add a photo to an existing photo album.
Important
In the final step, you must add a photo to your space in the same Internet
Explorer window. If you do not add a photo to your space at this time, and
you close the Internet Explorer window, the Photo Upload Control will not be
installed correctly.

Be safe

You must be an administrator on the PC to install the Photo Control. In Vista,
there have been cases reported where UAC is preventing the install even if you
are the administrator. What problem are you encountering and where are you
installing from? Windows Live Spaces or MSN Groups?
