Is there any way to change the default font and font size for messages that
I compose in Windows Live hotmail? I know it's easily changed after I write
a message, but I want the default changed so I don't have to keep doing it
over and over.

Hotmail does not include and option to pre-set the default font(Verdana 10 here)to another font.

I suppose the micro-small type size I have here is part of my answer--this is using Firefox--but my question is whether you have over-simplified hotmail in taking away the option to set default size and font. I also use MSN, which uses some form of hotmail, so there may be all kinds of interactions.
My new Live Hotmail as of this week had all kinds of Office Docs, photos,
emoticons, which a lot of people must use for you to feature them. In
exchange for which I lost Arial 12 as my default font. And your
information--Verdana 10--is not precisely correct for my case--I'm stuck in
Tahoma 10.
We're working the solution and will get right back to you by the end of the
war.

I didn't oversimplify anything...

Fyi...You responded to a post in a thread started months ago(April) and prior to the Wave 4 upgrade
- a lot has changed in Hotmail since this thread was started as you've noticed by looking in the Hotmail web UI.

I have discovered a workaround that achieves what you are trying to do.
Follow these steps:

From your Inbox page, click Options, then More Options.
Under Customize your mail, click Personal e-mail signature.
Type your name as you want it to appear in your signature.
Then format your name by using the dropdown menus for font name and font size.
You can also use bold, change the font color (foreground color), etc.
Click the Save button.
Click Go to inbox.
Click New to open a new message window. You should see your name in the
font name and font size that you saved.
If you place your cursor directly before your name and start typing your
message, it should appear in the same font name and font size as your
signature.
It works for me, and I hope it works for you!

You may use your personal e-mail signature to choose default font in windows
live hotmail...

In the options menu, select "more options" and then "personal e-mail
signature". Choose the desired font style, size and color and type the phrase
"text here". Save changes.

Now all you have to do, when writing a new message or a reply is highlight
the phrase "text here" and start typing. It's that simple!

I have followed your instructions but find that whilst the Personal Signature
in options shows Times New Roman 12, when I go to New Message it is different
and the Tool Bar ( for changing fonts etc ) is disabled! How do I cancel the
Personal Signature and return to Vista Default?
