Spell Checker not working

I just purchased an new HP dv6000t with Vista Home Premium. I installed MS
Office 2007 and MSN Premium 9.5. The spell checker does not work as English
is not listed as an option in the drop-down menu (even though the English
dictionary is installed). The only dictionary available in MSN Explorer is
for some reason French (France) and French (Canada). Any ideas how this can
be solved?

I had the same problem. It is an incompatibility between MSN and Office 2007
which will be fixed in some future release of MSN. They told me a month or
two. You can increase the pressure by letting them know you also have the
problem.

This is a huge incompatibility. I have adopted the conservative approach,
with respect to operating systems and software at least, and I am not
getting a new computer, Vista or Office 2007 until it appears all the bugs
have been worked out.

I know this solution is going to sound dumb, but it works. I am running MSN
with Vista32 and Office 2007 and also had the spell check issue. I remembered
having a dictionary error back with xp and office 2007 with msn and
remembered that in order to fix it I had to install a dictionary (obviously).
I remembered that when it was asking for a dictionary it kept prompting for
my Microsoft Digital Imaging Suite 10 Disk and that is what fixed it before.
So Lo and behold I decided to reinstall Digital Imaging Suite 10 into Vista
and it fixed the spelll check issue.

Scott,

Great idea and thank you. If I can find one of our sets of disks for Suite
10, I will try your fix.

I just purchased a new laptop and am having the same problem. Am I the only
one who believes that MSN could solve the problem in 10 seconds by offering
the correct file from Suite 10 via the internet? Lets see, which is the
better idea: [1] immediately offer a temporary fix for thousands of customers
or [2] play go-find-your-own-solution for thousands of customers for a few
months while MSN reinvents the wheel? Perhaps MSN should hire Scott!

Mike,

I believe that the dictionary file is sourced from a third party and that
there are legal strings preventing Microsoft from freely distributing it.
Also Office and MSN are different business units and there is a turf
problem. ;^)

If Qwest is the provider for your MSN Premium subscription, Qwest must contact
Microsoft on your behalf if they cannot provide a solution. The solution,
however, is to use a 3rd party spell checker.

I believe that there is another solution where you manually copy the
dictionaries from Office 2003 somewhere, assuming you have a copy of Office
2003. Look through old messages in this discussion group.and maybe you will
find it. Qwest suggests upgrading to Windows Live. English, French and
German spell checkers work great, but Spanish only works about half the
time. :o(

Waiting for an upgrade to MSN Explorer, or having to buy a third party spell
checker, isn't really satisfactory. Think about all the money these folks
have invested in Microsoft products, expecting them all to work happily
together.

So many people have the same problem...Qwest with MSN Premium,
non-compatibility with Vista and Office 2007. So as not for all of us to
fret, I live in Bellevue, WA, right next to Redmond, WA, home of Microsoft. I
have multiple neighbors who work for Microsoft. They have told me it was a
programer's error that accidently omitted spell checker from the msn email
software for users with Vista. That was nearly a year ago. I know for certain
that Microsoft has been notified hundreds of times about this problem, and is
stubbornly waiting to realease a newer version to correct the problem. Shame
on them. They can bombard us users with update after update, but they can't
fix a simple problem of adding an old technology of a spell checker, to msn
premium.....AND, they seem not to care either. We need to put pressure on
them to correct this problem. SO, MICROSOFT!!!!!!!.......GET SPELL CHECK BACK

Programmer's error ? Do you also believe all testes on MSn Premium on Vista were done in French ?

9.5 was available for download and use when Vista was released.
Only one update for Msn Premium, hardly a bombardment, and that update Version 9.6 is not applicable to all
It may have been fixed, the last content I've seen about Msn 9.6 release was in June, it mentioned nothing about spell check
availability.

"Testes", a Freudian slipup perhaps? Microsoft has been bitten several
times by untested software released to users who "really needed it". Afaik
MSN never included a spell checker, rather using the one included in various
versions of Office. You get the French one apparently because the French
team that supplies it did not see fit to upgrade their software to Office
2007 format. I don't really know, but there seems to be the possibility of
installing the spell check from Office 2000-2003, or any of a number of
third party spell checkers, of unknown (to me) quality. "multiple neighbors
who work for Microsoft", hmm, you may not know this, but such people have
signed a non-disclosure agreement, and for that reason their utterances are
not to be trusted. People who really know stuff, are waiting for the
official announcements. People who don't know stuff will tell you anything.

Programmer's error ? Do you also believe all testes on MSn Premium on
Vista were done in French ?
9.5 was available for download and use when Vista was released.
Only one update for Msn Premium, hardly a bombardment, and that update
Version 9.6 is not applicable to all
It may have been fixed, the last content I've seen about Msn 9.6 release
was in June, it mentioned nothing about spell check availability.

Qwest provides an excellent broadband service. The only serious competitor
in most markets is cable, and cable service can be real bad. I don't
believe I would take this step just because of the spell checker issue. But
what you do is up to you.

"Qwest".

I tried the fix posted by ...winston, and it worked like a charm. Install
proofing tools from your old version of Office, run an Office application to
activate, and then delete all of Office 2003 (for example) except proofing
tools. Now Office 2007, Outlook Express and MSN coexist happily. Free
spell checkers are also available.

You could also change your email client. If you have Office 2007 then
chances are real good that it came with Outlook. Give it a try. If your
MSN E-Mails are still on the server not a problem with Outlook Connector.

I have installed Proofing Tools from Office 2003 Student and Teacher
alongside Office 2007 under XP, and everything seems to be working as
planned. I have English (US, UK, Canada and Oz), French (Fr., Canada) and
Spanish (International Sort) available in Outlook Express. Since installing
German Language Pack for Office 2007 I also have available Italian (Italy).
Since OE uses the same spell checker interface as MSN, I would have to
assume that these languages would be available to MSN as well.

There are a number of commercial spell checkers available if you are leery
of installing unknown software from an unknown vendor, even as recommended
by Microsoft.

If you can get a copy of Office 2000, Office XP or Office 2003, perhaps from
Ebay or Amazon Marketplace, it is my understanding that the Proofing Tools
from any of these versions are compatible with MSN Premium Explorer.

With Office XP or 2003 you have to "activate" the program in order to
qualify to download Office updates. This is not necessary if using Proofing
Tools from Office 2000. This is a simple matter of installing Word, running
the program, agreeing to the activation screen, and finally uninstalling
Word. This operation leaves your Office 2007 programs untouched.

I look forward to hearing from you again. Thank you for using Microsoft
public discussion groups!

thanks so much for the spell check info -- it now works perfectly - only
took 10 min total to fix after about 2 months of "#$@%!!!" trying to figure
out how to fix the problem. Would be nice if Microsoft made all of the

stubbornly waiting to realease a newer version to correct the problem. Shame
on them. They can bombard us users with update after update, but they can't
fix a simple problem of adding an old technology of a spell checker, to msn

If Qwest is the provider for your MSN Premium subscription, Qwest must contact
Microsoft on your behalf if they cannot provide a solution. The solution,
however, is to use a 3rd party spell checker.

For: Mark E Unroe (who supplied a problem resolution):
pc: Vista SP1, Office 2007 Student, Qwest MSN Premium 9.6 w/DSL
Problem: MSN spell checker not having English dictionary
Resolution: install from http://www.hoolulu.com/sw/hoolulu/Spell.EXE

Thankyou Mark for your 'solution' which worked fine.

There were repeated past promises of a fix in MSN 9.6, from last April, and
from both Qwest and MS; I forwarded your post to both. Let's see if they
pickup the que and form an MS Update response for this problem for all others
to benefit by.
It's unfortunate we as 'supported' MS users are placed in a position of
having to take the 'risk' of employing an unknown code fix.

I run into the same problem. After two calls to MSN I resolved the issue.
Follow these steps:
Click on this web address (http://www.snapfiles.com/get/spelloe.html) and
click on download. Once the download is complete click on HELP & SETTINGS,
click
on SETTINGS, click on E-MAIL, click on WRITING E-MAIL, click on SPELL
CHECKER, go down to SELECT A SPELLING DICTIONARY and click on ENGLISH/US,
click on SAVE SETTINGS.

Here are two numbers that might be of help.

Office 03 *and* Office 2007 installation place files in a common location(user's profile).
Installation of 2007 overwrites 2003' same named file(s)

The suggested fixes are to

A: Reinstall the proofing tools from an earlier version of Office(Office CD required)
http://www.outlook-tips.net/archives/2006/20061228.htm

B. Install a third-party spellchecking utility.

During Custom Install of MSN Explorer from http://membercenter.msn.com,
check Microsoft Digital Image Suite, Standard Edition and continue with the
MSN install. That puts the English Language Proofing Tools in your system.
It installs English Language Proofing Tools for U.S, U.K, Australia and
Canada into MSN Explorer. Not exactly intuitive, that.

It's not quite right about Office 2007 overwriting files. Office 2007
default installation actually deletes files MSSP3EN.LEX and MSSP3ENA.LEX
which are needed for MSN and OE to use the English Proofing Tools. If one
selects Custom Install, keep existing versions, while installing Office 2007
then the files are not deleted and the English spell checker is available to
MSN.

Installation of Office 2003 Proofing Tools also restores the missing files,
but other files that are replaced appear to be identical. I could be wrong
here, but it doesn't seem to adversely affect the Office 2007 Proofing
Tools, knock on wood.

But if you choose Office 2003 Custom Setup and then only install English
Language Proofing Tools, then you will have to activate the product somehow
to prevent Office Updates from complaining. You can do this by installing
e.g. Word from Office 2003, running it, activating the product, then making
it not available in Office 2003 Setup. This is a fairly complicated process
compared with installing Microsoft Digital Image Suite, Standard Edition in
MSN Installation Wizard. However you will want to activate Office 2003,
even if you are only using the Proofing Tools from it, so that you get any
security fixes that apply.

I have used both methods with success, but depending on your MSN account
type or partner provider, Microsoft Digital Image Suite, Standard Edition
may or may not be available to you.

Cheers,

Earle

I downloaded Digital Image Suite just before making the post. I am not

Its function appears to be taken over by Microsoft Office 2007 Picture

Install Microsoft Digital Image Standard 2006. This is available as part of
the MSN Premium download. If you are an MSN Premium customer then it will
be free and it includes English Language Proofing Tools. If you have Office
2000, 2002, or 2003 then install only the English Language Proofing Tools
using custom install. If you want to pass Office Genuine Advantage and get
updates, then install Word too, activate the product, and uninstall Word. I
have personally verified that both methods work to get a spell checker in
MSN Premium.

People in the Office Business Unit don't care about compatibility with MSN.
Very few people care about compatibility with MSN. It is up to MSN
development, as the less important product, to keep up with developments in
other MSFT products.

Any ideas how this can
be solved?

Thank you for taking the frustrating time to figure this one out. I was
about to start pulling my hair out until I decided to read the postings on
this subject. I will now try to download one of the suggested spell
checkers. Thanks again to you and all the others with the same problem that
ran a post.

I have just escalated this issue to the Global Resolutions team in WA and the
response I got is: "You will have to wait for a fix which will come at some
point later." Is this the response that should be given to paying customers
of software of which essential functionality is missing?? I don't think so.
And how is it that a company which produces both pieces of software (MSN and
Office) is unable to resolve the issue and did not know about this
incompatibility in advance? Did they not test the software? Was MSN not
aware that Office 2007 and Vista were being released in advance? I thought
that the point of the horrible 9.5 version was to make it compatible with
Vista . . . . What the heck is going on?????????

Proceed at your own risk...have not tested it or have a need to..I use Outlook 2007 for all my accounts.

You might try this if you have an earlier version of Office not installed on another machine.

Thank God there's another exasperated, disgusted, angry Vista buyer out
there! I've been across the Web globe trying to find and answer and have
installed Word 2002 dictionary, Word 2003 dictionary, the whole shootin'
match for both and STILL can't get an answer that works for MSN email and
won't crash the whole system every two or three days. I'm furious and truly
disappointed that non-humans at Microsoft created a system that is so utterly
abominable to navigate and essentially useless for the rest of us.

I work for a company and I support the MSN Premium software. I know that the
MSN Premium software is not compatible with the Microsoft Office 2007, but is
compatible with other versions of Outlook. Not sure why Microsoft would do
this but they did.

The only way to get the spellchecker to work is to install Microsoft Outlook
2002 or 2003 or Microsoft Works.

Hope this helps you.

I have BOTH office and WORKS...bought an pd for BOTH and they were NOT CHEAP
so I am NOT happy with MSN either....after paying $126 for Office and $45 for
works and then THEY want me to pay $49.95 for a solution!!! There is a fix
out there but they won't give it to you until you pay that fee.....even their
support is no longer FREE that's how cheap they are getting GATES isn't
making enough to support his charities so he needs this now....now the other
solution is to write all your email in Office and spell check then copy and
paste it into your msn email.....I won't give MSN one more DIME till they fix
this......!

Why in the world would you purchase, let alone install both MS Works and MS

You paid $126 for Office 2007? What version?

If you purchased a retail version of Office 2007 at any price, it includes

Bueno, Señor Oso, "doing stuff really good" is becoming the effective
standard in place of "really well". I don't know anyone who actually
says "really well" any more, but they insist on teaching us that in the
schools. ¿Por qué? Le hará a uno parecer pedante. El espanglish
también se acepta.

Im so sorry, that is my skydrive folder, I put that out there because
it is dificult to locate that file on the internet the program is
called spell checker for OE 2.1 if you dont trust that link you can
google or live search it.

the real reason why spell checker for msn doesnt work with office 2007
is because msn looks for the spell sheker program on Outlook Express
and office 2007 dictionaries are not compatible with OE aparently
office 2007 was made for Windows Vista users and Windows Vista doesnt
have OE.
spell.exe will install dictionary files on a folder located where the
OE dictionary is so msn can look for it.

the file will work for sure it is not a scam and if I can do something
to prove it I will, i dont know if there is a way to post pics here so
I will put a link for a link on skydrive of how installation looks
like.(im sorry it has to be on skydrive but it is easier for me, you
can look at the preview before downloading though) I will put the
image of the location where the file installs. again if any other
questions please ask me. I will try to keep updated on this
disscusion.

What warranty?

The spell checker in Office 2007 is not compatible with OE6 or MSN Mail. Try
one of these free spell checkers instead:

Vampirefo's Spell Checker for OE 2.x
http://www.majorgeeks.com/download.php?det=2952

TinySpell (checks spelling as you type)
http://www.tinyspell.m6.net/

Australian English Spell Check
(Also suitable for other English speaking countries.)
http://www.justlocal.com.au/clients/oespellcheck/

If you have an earlier version of Office available as well, see:

Looks like we have a breach of warranty, two months appears reasonable to
come up with a fix but that two months was up over a year ago. Does anyone
think this warrants a Class Action?

I have same problem. Have had many conversations with MSN, MS and Qwest. No
luck. I purchased MS Office 6 months ago because the MSN Pop-Up said I needed
it in order to get the spell check to work! Still no spell check only in
French.

One would thing with all the brains that MS has working for them they could
fix the problem.

Comment: I have fifty-four languages available in Outlook Express 6.0 Tools,
Options, Spelling, Language. This is with Microsoft Office 2003 and Office
Proofing Tools installed on XP. That's a lot. Ja, it won't check spelling
as I type. It seems possible to install any of these in MSN Explorer or
Windows Live Mail, if one is inclined and has the Proofing Tools handy.

Cheers,

That's why it says "comment". I couldn't believe that Microsoft used to
sell proofing tools for fifty-four languages for $69.95. Now they have
wised up and it is $24.95 for each extra language. On the other hand Office
2007 Language Packs come with the ability to change the user interface in
Office programs, which 2003 Proofing tools did not have. My post was more
about marketing than about anything else.

Windows Mail and Windows Live Mail, U.S. versions, come with French,
English, German and Spanish spell checkers. WLM also has Korean. The op in
Vista already has the files he needs; he just needs to figure out where they
are and where to copy them to make MSN Explorer work, ¿no?

The 2003 proofing tools seem to be good in the languages I have tried. They
may or may not be worth the trouble to install compared with the possible
ease of installing a third party app. It does appear that the dictionaries
should work with MSN, Vista Mail or Windows Live Mail however. If I get
time to install the Portuguese dictionary, I will post something.

That's why it says "comment". I couldn't believe that Microsoft used
to sell proofing tools for fifty-four languages for $69.95. Now they
have wised up and it is $24.95 for each extra language. On the other
hand Office 2007 Language Packs come with the ability to change the
user interface in Office programs, which 2003 Proofing tools did not
have. My post was more about marketing than about anything else.
Windows Mail and Windows Live Mail, U.S. versions, come with French,
English, German and Spanish spell checkers. WLM also has Korean. The
op in Vista already has the files he needs; he just needs to figure out
where they are and where to copy them to make MSN Explorer work, ¿no?
Cheers,
Earle

Not trying to be blunt, but OE's capability won't help the op in Vista..

Comment: I have fifty-four languages available in Outlook Express 6.0
Tools, Options, Spelling, Language. This is with Microsoft Office
2003 and Office Proofing Tools installed on XP. That's a lot. Ja,
it won't check spelling as I type. It seems possible to install any
of these in MSN Explorer or Windows Live Mail, if one is inclined and
has the Proofing Tools handy.
Cheers,
Earle

I just purchased an new HP dv6000t with Vista Home Premium. I installed MS
Office 2007 and MSN Premium 9.5. The spell checker does not work
as English
is not listed as an option in the drop-down menu (even though the English
dictionary is installed). The only dictionary available in MSN Explorer is
for some reason French (France) and French (Canada). Any ideas
how this can
be solved?

I have had this problem for too long so finally read everyone's ideas. I
must say MSN did not help satisfactorily at all with this and wanted me to
install weird programs to fix it. So after reading here I installed tiny
Spell - http://tinyspell.m6.net/ . It was easy to install and worked the
second that I restated and seems to be working for just fine. It makes a
ring and underscores the word instantly. I am sorry it took me so long to
find one that works. MSN has been working on this for at least 6 months
since I got my new computer. Too long.

Msft released this KB article in 2007.

The problem in OE(the article main interest) is the same with Msn Premium software since neither shipped with a built in spell
checker and relied on a third party client(Works Suite, Powerpoint, Word, or non-msft add-on).

If Office 2007 is not installed on your machine, and spell checking was not functioning, then the usual cause is a corrupt
dictionary, dll files, or registry.

Are you using Msn 9.5 or 9.6 ?

Google "free spell checker". I am serious, this is what MSN or Office
support will tell you.

If you have a copy of Office 2000, 2002 or 2003, or any Office application
then you can install the English Proofing Tools only from that system. Do
Custom Install and select "Not Available" for everything except English
Language Proofing Tools, which is under Tools I think. If you need to
activate the product so as to get updates, then install any application from
the product, run it once, activate the product, and then make the
application not available again in Setup. It's a chore but it is a way to
get a Microsoft-only solution to your spelling problem.

You need to use a third party spell checker if Office 2007 is installed.

RE: No spell check in MSN Explorer e-mail only--as opposed to Windows e-mail
or Outlook e-mail:

Installing my old FrontPage 2002 instantly restored English options to the
previous only France and Canada French options.

I also got the following message from MSN support services

"...if you are using the 2007 Microsoft Office system, as well as Microsoft
Works 8. Please also note that by default, Windows Vista is using Microsoft
Office 2007.
When the upgrade from earlier versions of Office to the 2007 Microsoft
Office system, the old spell-checking files were removed for some languages
such as English, Spanish, and German. These files are replaced with newer
versions included in the 2007 Microsoft Office system and they are currently
incompatible with the MSN software.

Please do note that currently, spell-checking capability is available only
if one of the following software packages is installed on your computer:

Office XP

Office 2000/Office 2000 SR1

Word 2000

FrontPage 2000

Works 6.0

Works 5.0

Word 95

Works 5.0

Works 4.0

Works 3.0

As a workaround, you can use the Microsoft Office 2003 disc to install the
English Language Proofing tool. You do not have to install the whole
program.

To install the proofing tool from Office 2003, please follow these steps:

1. Insert the Microsoft Office 2003 CD into the CD drive or into
the DVD drive.

2. Click 'Custom Install'.

3. In the setup window, expand 'Office Shared Features'.

Note: If you cannot find 'Office Shared Features', expand
'Microsoft Word', and then locate 'Office Shared Features'.

4. Expand 'Proofing Tools'.

5. Select 'English', or select the required language, and then
click 'Next'.

6. When the setup is complete, click 'Finish', and then restart
the computer.

If you do not have a Microsoft Office 2003 CD, there are various, free,
third-party spelling checker programs available on the Internet. To learn
about available programs, visit the Microsoft Communities site. This site
lets you obtain advice from other users and from Microsoft Most Valuable
Professionals (MVPs). To access the Microsoft Communities site, visit the
following Microsoft Web site:

http://www.microsoft.com/communities/default.mspx

Another way to find spelling checkers is to use a search site to obtain
results, for example, http://www.live.com

If you have other concerns, please contact us again and we will be happy to
assist you.

Sincerely,

Rey

What worked for me was Microsoft Digital Image Standard 2006, available on
